Lost ... and Found!

As my wife and I did not make it to Herne Bay today, I decided to spend some more time sorting out my toy/wargames room. During the course of the afternoon I opened a large storage box that was at the bottom of a pile of boxes I had not yet begun to sort through ... and found that it was full of unpainted 15mm and 20mm-scale figures. I had not realised that I still owned these figures as I thought that I had got rid of them nearly ten years ago.

In amongst the figures were a large number of 20mm-scale Jacklex figures including 1904-era Russians, American Civil War figures in Kepis, rifle-armed Tribesmen, and Colonial gunners. There were also other 20mm-scale Colonial figures from Tumbling Dice Miniatures and an unidentified manufacturer (possibly B&B Miniatures?).

This discovery has placed me in somewhat of a quandary. I had planned to use Spencer Smith Miniatures for my imagi-world project, but the discovery of these 20mm-scale figures means that I already have a large number of highly suitable figures ... and it would be a great shame not to use them.

  1. Looks like you'll just have to do both Bob. You can't have too many figures to use, especially if you have improved your storage options!!

  2. There is a lot to be said for 20mm., especially when space is limited. I've found that, as small as they are, they are still large enough for me to see to paint. They may fit your existing terrain better than 30mm as well.

(and, of course, Jacklex also has an honourable pedigree.)

    Happy Choosing!

  3. Jim Duncan,

It makes sense to concentrate on one or two figure scales. At present I have 15mm, 20mm, 25/28mm, 30mm, and 54mm-scale figures ... which might just be a scale too far!

That said, it would be a great waste not to find some use for the newly 'found' figures ... and I do now have a lot more storage ....

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. Ross Mac,

I started wargaming with 20mm-scale figures, and some of my first metal figures were Jacklex, so they occupy a special place in my wargaming heart.

If (and it is a big IF) I do go with the 20mm-scale figures I have 'found', it would fit in with the rationalisation of figure scales that I was planning. As you say, they would also fit in better with my existing terrain etc,

This is not going to be an easy decision to make.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Must admit I likje the Jacklex figures. One of my intended projects is using the Rose 20mm Colonials. They only did 4 infantry poses, no guns or cavalry, and so I checked out the Jacklex figures to fill in the gaps - they do, which means Jaclex will be one of only 2 'non Garrison' manufacturers I'm still adding to my armies. The other is actually RAFM for their Ancient artillery.

  6. Xaltotun of Python (Rob),

I have some old Rose Miniatures ACW 20mm-scale figures amongst my collection ... somewhere. They fit in well with my Jacklex figures.

I live less than half a mile from the last location of the Rose Miniatures company (it was in Llanover Road, Plumstead) and managed to visit it once before it closed down. I had not realised that the figures were still being cast until very recently.

In many ways it makes sense to use what I have in my unpainted figure 'mountain' before I buy new figures, and that any new figures I buy should be to used to 'flesh out' what I have not to replace them.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Hi Bob,

Of course much of the Jacklex range is now available once again from Peter at Spencer Smith.

I would suggest that making use of what you have - especially given the size of PW armies - makes a lot of sense.

    All the best,

  8. David Crook,

It would make sense to do as you suggest, especially as compatible figures from other manufactuerer's ranges are available.

Something for me to give serious thought to.

    All the best,

    Bob
