Wargames Illustrated No.423, March 2023

For the second month running I was tempted to buy a copy of WARGAMES ILLUSTRATED.

Yet again, it was a couple of articles that tipped the balance.

The first was Jervis Johnson's article about the campaign system (STRATEDY & GUILE) that he has developed to work with his latest Napoleon rules, VALOUR & FORTITUDE. Whilst STRATEGY & GUILE are designed to work with these rules, they look as if they can be easily adapted for other periods. Movement is on a point-to-point map, and it looks as if the amount of admin that the umpire or umpires must do is reasonable and not too onerous.

The other article that attracted my attention was by Jim Graham, and was about Operation Polo, the Indian annexation of Hyderabad in 1948. Having already designed and played a game about Operation Vijay (the Indian annexation of Goa in 1961), I've looked at refighting this very short campaign myself several times ... and this might just be enough encouragement to do so!

  1. Is this the issue with Warlord ECW EPIC sprue included?

    1. Jim Duncan,

There was no sprue with copy that I bought.

      All the best,

    2. I think that’ll be the April issue, Jim. (I’m intrigued by the epic idea….but already have plenty of ECW, so not THAT intrigued, if you get my drift….🙂).

    3. Martin S.,

I assume that it hasn’t been published yet … but one never knows with magazines whose cover date is often at variance with the day it is published.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Nice to see them developing a campaign system to go with the rules, which I might check out, so thanks for the 'heads up' Bob:).

    1. Steve J.,

Cheers! It is nice to see things like this being published in magazines rather than as a booklet that you have to buy.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi Bob, I'd agree that is a pretty decent issue of 'WI', and Jervis' campaign rules look very interesting, and presumably adaptable to any 'point to point' campaign map.
I'd also like to put in a word for 'Miniature Wargames' mag, I think John T is doing a good job there too, albeit perhaps with more limited resources. By coincidence they have a series on Horse and Musket campaign rules too, this time by Jon Sutherland. Plus the usual stalwarts like Conrad Kinch and Arthur Harman, who you know well - and in the March issue, an article by Richard Marsh of 'Rapid Fire' fame, giviing some WW2 Italian scenarios.Worth a look..

    1. David in Suffolk,

I tend to avoid buying either of the mainstream glossy wargame magazines, but recently both have had issues that I thought were worth buying.

I hope to buy a copy of the latest MW when I visit WHSmith later this week. I get the electronic version, but for issues such as the March one, I like to buy a paper edition.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. I get sent WI as I used to advertise in it and I must admit that I flicked through this issue and it went straight into recycling. Which seems to happen more and more... My hobby isn't the same as WI's target market.

This isn't the issue with the ECW sprue that is next issue as far as I know.

    1. Mike Lewis,

There was a time when I subscribed to MW, WI, and WSS … but nowadays I wait until I see a copy in a newsagent before bothering to buy a copy or not.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Hi Bob, when I read this I immediately thought YES free Epic sprue! But I think it's actually the April issue. I have a couple of people on the lookout for a copy without success, seems it's in great demand.

    1. 'Lee,

I have not seen the April issue on sale in any of the branches of WH Smith I have visited recently. Perhaps it will appear over the weekend or during next week.

      All the best,

      Bob
