My old friend Professor Gary Sheffield has invited me to take part in an online American Civil War campaign ... and I have just issued my first commands to my Confederate troops!
The campaign is taking place on an island off the coast of the Carolinas that bears a remarkable resemblance to Sicily. Indeed, some of the place names do appear to be similar – if not the same – to some of the places on that Italian island!
Both sides have similar-sized forces:
- 27 x Infantry Regiments (6 x Elite infantry regiments, and 15 Regular infantry regiments, and 6 x Militia infantry regiments)
- 9 x Cavalry Regiments
- 4 x Artillery Batteries
The infantry regiments are organised into infantry brigades. Each infantry brigade comprises two to six infantry regiments, and each infantry regiment must be of the same status. A cavalry regiment and/or artillery battery may be attached to the infantry brigade.
The cavalry regiments can be organised into cavalry brigades or attached to infantry brigades. Each cavalry brigade comprises two to six cavalry regiments.
I hope to write blog posts about how this campaign unfolds, but in the meantime, I'm keeping my ORBAT and initial moves to myself!

That looks very interesting Bob - I'm keen to read how it progresses. Which rules are you using for resolving the battles?
ReplyDeleteMaudlin Jack Tar,
DeleteGary and I have fought a previous online campaign and will be using his ACW version of the PW rules.
All the best,
Bob
Sounds like this will be very enjoyable. Nice teaser start.
ReplyDeleteWEK 3,
DeleteI am hoping that it’s going to give us lots of enjoyment.
All the best,
Bob
As a resident of the USA, I can say that we proudly borrowed several names for our cities from the old country.
ReplyDeleteMr. Pavone,
DeleteI’ve only visited the US twice, but managed to go to Boston on both occasions … having previously been to Boston, Lincolnshire in the UK.
I live not far from Greenwich in London … and it felt a bit odd going through Greenwich Village in New York as they are very different from each other.
All the best,
Bob
Bob -
ReplyDeleteThat looks like fun!
By the way, did you know of the United States of Amazonia, through which runs the great river Anaconda? No? It's one of those little projects of mine that have never quite got on to the drawing board, let alone off it!
Cheers,
Ion
Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteIt’s been great fun so far … and the fighting has yet to take place!
I like that sound of your United States of Amazonia! If it is set in South America, it could take on my imagi-nation Cordeguay!
All the best,
Bob
Bob -
DeleteI was really thinking about the Amazonian Civil War (yes, the southern American continent, probably the Caribbean Coast) - but Cordeguay might well add an interesting dimension!
Is it possible that the intrigues of Azuria might extend to installing a certain Archduke Mandocello as Cordequay's Head of State ... ? Of course, the Confederated States of Anaconda would support such
a move - getting in good with the Great Powers of Europeia - but the Union of the States of Amazonia no doubt would take a rather dimmer view...
Something to ponder over anyhow!
Cheers,
Ion
Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteThis all sounds very interesting ... and has lots of potential to involve all sorts of shenanigans along the lines of the French involvement in Maximillian's Mexican Empire!
Its certainly got me thinking!
All the best,
Bob
I'm looking forward to the campaign reports, and perhaps an AI generated picture of you as a Confederate general?
ReplyDeleteMark Cordone,
DeleteI am expecting that the initial clashes are not too far off … and then I hope to share the ChatGPT image of me as a Confederate General.
All the best,
Bob
Looks like a fun campaign, Bob. Is it you v Gary, or is Gary the ‘GM’ and you’re up against that well known wargamer, A.N.Other?
ReplyDeleteMartin S.,
DeleteIt’s Gary vs. me, with him acting as umpire and the Union commander. We hope to fight the battle online using WhatsApp.
All the best,
Bob
Hello there Bob,
ReplyDeleteThat looks a great setting for a campaign but with all that wet stuff surrounding it how about a little naval action to add to the flavour?
I know a great set of rules you could use…. ;-)
All the best,
DC
Sadly, both navies are detained elsewhere for the duration of the campaign... We decided to keep it simple and land based. However if the game works, a future campaign might well include the sea.
