A busy few days ahead

I have a busy few days ahead, and my usual rather relaxed way of life is going to have to be put aside … at least until Wednesday!

Today I had to take my car to Dartford to have some repairs done to its bodywork. Someone drove into the back of my car whilst it was parked in a supermarket car park and put a rather nasty dent into the middle of the rear bumper and valance. Needless to say, they did not leave a note of any kind and there were no witnesses … so I will have to pay for the repairs myself. (I did think of claiming on my car insurance, but by the time I had paid the policy excess and knowing that the premiums would rise if I made a claim, I worked out that it would be cheaper to pay for the repairs myself.)

On Wednesday a surveyor is paying us a visit prior to us having a new walk-in shower fitted in our current shower room. The occupational therapist recommended that we have a wet room installed, but in the end we decided on a walk-in shower with a folding seat and handrails that had a tray that was almost flush with our existing floor. Hopefully that will be fitted within a month, and then I can begin showering as often as I like.

So, for the next few days I will be carless, although I can drive Sue’s car which is also an automatic and will have to stay in on Wednesday until the surveyor has been. With a bit of luck, I might be able to do some work on my floating shelf model railway and fight the battles of Tamai and Omdurman. I’ve been hoping to do the latter for some time, but the opportunity to do so has not presented itself … until now!

  1. BOB,
Yes- I've also been run into in a car park- slight damage to the rear of the car- unlike you I'll not be having the damage repaired as it is only a slight mark. Hope you can soon get back to your model railway- mine is going well- looking at some metcalf model card building kits today at my local Hobby Shop. All the best. KEV.

    1. Kevin Robertson (Kev),

The dent was unsightly rather than serious, but if I ever want to sell it, it will need to be fixed.

I’m making slow progress with my model railway, but I hope to be able to visit a specialist model railway shop on Saturday to buy some bits and pieces that will help mr move things forward.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. I hope the damage wasn't too expensive, and that all goes smoothly with your shower installation.

    1. Mark Cordone,

I expect it to cost about £400 to get fixed and I should get it back from the repairers on Wednesday or Thursday.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. The damage to your car wasn't your fault so your rates should not go up.
At my home a couple years ago, my new car was parked under one of those 10X20 feet metal framed carports that you can get off Amazon. Although the carport was anchored down, strong winds blew it up onto the adjecent hillsize and it scratched/scarred my car in a few places. It cost $9500 USD in repairs from Ben Clymers body shop (my insurance recommended this place). I paid the $500 insurance deductable but my rates didn't go up because this is considered a comprehensive claim. I have AAA insurance.

    1. Spearhead,

Car insurance rates in the UK seem to rise drastically each year, and although I have a protected ‘no claims’ bonus, making a claim seems to trigger an increase regardless of whose fault it is.

A few years ago I was driving around a car park when someone reversed into me. Luckily my dashcam showed that I was driving at about 5mph at the time they hit me and that they were not looking behind them when they reversed. (They were using a reversing camera that only showed what was directly behind them, not what was about to drive past them.) They denied responsibility, refused to give me their insurance details, and got very angry when I photographed the damage to both cars and the registration plate. I reported the accident to my insurers, who initially wanted to do what is called ‘knock for knock’ (e.g. My insurers paid for my damage and the other party’s insurance paid for theirs). When they saw the footage, they claimed everything from the other driver’s insurance and I paid nothing. However, next year my insurance premium went up, and although the insurer denied that the accident was the cause, other insurers gave me a better deal and I changed insurer.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Bob,
How are the games at the Wednesday night club going?

Thanks for asking. The games are going well. I am currently taking part in an RPG campaign called Domenwood. I am an itinerate friar (Brother Crump) and I am in the service of an aspiring knight called 'Black Philip'.

I am not a natural RPGer, but the banter around the table during the game is great as the other players are an very enjoyable bunch to be with.

I am hoping to take part in a re-fight of the Battle of Stamford Bridge at the club in the next few weeks as the duty manager is a wargamer with a huge collection of Vikings and Anglo-Saxons that he has never had the opportunity to wargame with.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Steve,

It really great to get out of the house and spend time with people who enjoy gaming. There's even a few that also like wargaming and model railways!

      All the best,

      Bob
