Adventures in Dolmenwood

Last February I joined the Dice on the Hill group that meets at the nearby Shrewsbury House community centre. Since then I’ve played several different games, but for most of the time I’ve been taking part in a fantasy role-play game set in DOLMENWOOD.

This is a tabletop fantasy role-play published by Necrotic Gnome and designed by Gavin Norman, It is described as being 'a dark‑whimsical, fairy‑folk‑horror setting inspired by British Isles folklore and classic fairy tales like The King of Elfland’s Daughter and Stardust.'

My character is Father Crump. He is a wandering friar who has joined the group of adventurers who are travelling around Dolmenwood to minister to their moral needs (particularly the leader, a young and somewhat psychopathic knight known as Black Philip), to spread the word (and influence) of the Pluritine Church, and to fight the evil influence of the dreaded and ungodly Nag Lord.

Father Crump ... as envisaged by ChatGPT.

Thanks to my honesty, I’ve ended up being the group’s unofficial treasurer … and as a result of eating some mushrooms during one encounter, I was afflicted for some time with bulging eyes that acted like lanterns in the dark. I was eventually ‘cured’, thanks to the ministrations of more senior members of the church, but in exchanged I was tasked to seek out and protect lost shrines that the Nag Lord is seeking to control as part of his dastardly plans.

Unlike my fellow adventurers, I am not heavily armed or armoured. During our adventures I have acquired a war mace and three daggers, and these are my only weapons … although I have been known to use a small sledgehammer in close combat and recently hit an opponent over the head with a metal holy symbol whilst claiming to be blessing them with it.

  1. Well Bob, you are full of surprises! I would not have imagined you being interested in RPGs; Chapeau Sir! As a solo player, I have found that 4 Against Darkness is a nice easy system for generating random games, should you want to indulge more -

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

In the past I’ve never met a group of people that I wanted to play RPGs with … but now I have! They are a great bunch and I enjoy the humorous interchanges that take place. It is helped by the fact that no one takes the RPG terribly seriously and never lose sight of the fact that is a game.

Thanks for the link. I’ll have a look at it over the weekend.

      All the best,

      Bob

    3. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Wow! This looks great ... and I will have to set aside some time to read about your adventures in detail.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Prufrock,

Last week we got involved in a bar fight (which is where I hit someone over the head with a religious symbol) and this week we ended the session stumbling into confrontation with some of the Nag Lord’s minions … which will be resolved next week!

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I haven't played anything set in Dolemwood. My group just started a new campaign using Gun Powder and Brimstone, A Monk Borg spin off. I second MJT's recommendation of Four Against Darkness. Lots and lots of supporting material as well.

    1. Mark Cordone,

I gather from the GM that Dolmenwood is still in the process of fully coming online, and that parts of it are being crowd funded … and is slightly behind schedule.

Thanks for the endorsement of MJT’s recommendation. I’ll certainly be looking at Four against Darkness over the weekend.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Sounds fun, Bob!

I have rarely had a group to play with so most of my RPG experience has been solo.

I have played 4AD. The basic game is a dungeon delve, where you run a party of 4 characters. There is additional material that adds other stuff, from towns to overland/outdoor adventures to guilds of adventurers.

    1. Fitz-Badger,

It is a great deal of fun!

I must admit that I have never tried solo RPGs, but 4AD sounds interesting and I might give it a try.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. My family and I are headed to MAGWest this weekend. It's a convention for Music and Gaming. I hope to sit in on a one-shot session or maybe host my own impromptu game while we are there.

I had to ‘bless’ him twice as my first ‘blessing’ only stunned him!
