My Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War collection: Part 7a: ‘I once was lost, but now I’m found’

I recently paid a visit to our storage unit, and whilst looking for a boxful of MDF bases, I found three boxes containing more vehicles and figures that I planned to renovate and include in my Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War collection.

The contents of the the first box - which were all from the collection of the late Eric Knowles - included the following German troops and equipment:

18 x Cavalry

2 x Pack horses

6 x Artillery Limbers

2 x 75mm FK 16 nA Field Guns

2 x 75mm sIG 18 Infantry Guns

2 x 7.7 cm IG L/20 (?)

14 x Dismounted Cavalry

11 x Officers and HQ Staff

  1. Ohh! Cavalry! That should add a very interesting dimension to your games!

    1. Mark Cordone,

I already have a few Russian cavalry and think that my German Army needs some to counter them … and to act as recce for my foot and horse-drawn infantry divisions.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Some interesting figures Bob. I particularly like the HQ staff. Eric Knowles clearly had a fine collection of figures.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! Eric’s collection was huge … and included units for most European WW2 armies. I have a small part of his German and Russian collection as well’s some of his US troops.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Always nice to have some cavalry and limbers. Some of the HQ types look rather like gunners to me.

    1. Martin Rapier,

I hate painting horses but love including cavalry and horse-drawn transport in my WW2 armies.

You may well be right about some of the HQ figures. Eric was great one for repurposing figures and vehicles.

      All the best,

      Bob

They are a great addition to my collection … but I’ve no idea where Eric got them from.

      All the best,

  5. Bob -
Years ago I bought second hand a fair number of German WW2 Cavalry - nicely painted, too. To this day I have no idea what to do with them!

That’s a great purchase! I plan to use my German cavalry as recce troops for the horse-drawn infantry.
