BOB, That is scary- hope we never see it happen. I still think that a future war would be fought out with nuclear weapons and not be a conventional war. Regards. KEV.
Forty years on, the situation is actually worse. The UK has better AEW aircraft these days, but there are now only two Typhoon interceptor fighter bases (Coningsby and Lossiemouth) and Markham, which is where the F35s are based. The number of Typhoons in service is around 110 … and they will not be replaced until at least 2040!
The UK’s Rapier SAMs have now been replaced by Sky Sabre … but there are less than ten launchers in service! These would be supplemented by Royal Navy Sea Viper AD systems that are mounted on destroyers and which use Aster 15/30 SAMs.
Frankly, the UK's air defence system is bit of a sham, and until the government begins spending serious money on it, it will remain so.
Sorry for the rant, but defending the country is supposed to be one of the government’s main priorities. Adam Smith made this very clear many years ago in his book, THE WEALTH OF NATIONS.
BOB, Thanks for the reply- being close to Europe does mean that the UK needs solid defenses- we're a long way away here in Australia - however I do worry about our own defenses and wonder why the government does't seem to spend near enough. Regards. KEV.
BOB, The biggest threat to stability in our region is China. American wants our government to spend more on the military. China is a long way away from Australia and there are many countries between us and China. I think that China has it's sights set on the small country of Tiawan. Regards. KEV.
