Triang Minic Ships: Some of my first 1:1200th-scale model ships.

Lines Brothers (who traded as Triang) introduced the Minic warships range of 1:1200th-scale in 1958 ... when I was eight years-old and already keen on joining the Royal Navy. As a result, I acquired number of them over the next few years, including the following:

  • Two models of the cruiser HMS Superb.
  • Models of the aircraft carriers HMS Albion, HMS Bulwark, and HMS Centaur.
  • Three models of Daring-class destroyers.
  • Three Ton-class minesweepers.

I still own some of these models, but they are not in the best of condition (scratched or badly repainted models and missing masts) and really need to be renovated.

Some time ago, I bought four of the Harbour sets and my 'fleet' was increased by a model of the battleship HMS Vanguard and yet another Albion-class aircraft carrier. What my collection is missing are examples of the Battle-class destroyers as well as the Type 12 Whitby-class and Type 15 V-class frigates. the latter having been converted from wartime-built V-class destroyers

I hope to rectify this situation with some eBay purchases as I’ve found some examples on sale there.

Keep reading this blog for further news!

    1. Geordie an Exiled FoG,

HMS Swiftsure and HMS Superb (the ships modelled by Triang Minic) had a sistership, HMS Minotaur/HMCS Ontario.

Although not an exact replicas, they can easily stand in for the eleven wartime Colony-class cruisers. The survivors served with the Royal Navy, Riyal Canadian Navy, Royal New Zeland Navy, Indian Navy, and Peruvian Navy.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob -
Them there are some very handy looking toy--- vessels! You've got me thinking about revisiting my own 'Mighty Armadas'. I hadn't thought of looking around for kits for craft smaller than my battleships and carriers, but, apart from a little Japanese submarine hunter, I've had to scratch-build 4 'Narvik' class destroyers in roughly the right scale for my Ra'esharn Imperial Navy. That was some years ago - so long, withal, that I don't recall whether I ever posted pics of them on my blog. So far, the other navies (Kiivar and Saabia) haven't any such craft. I've knocked together some Trumpeter (interwar) naval aircraft for other interesting naval operations...

Just an aside. Before sending a WORD file of my 'Blacklands War' I'm having a read-through of the whole thing, and doing some proof-reading as I go. I read the first 100 pages last night...

    Cheers,
    Ion
