Frontier/Musket Wargames Rules are finished!

Despite having spent a large part of the day visiting my father-in-law in Herne Bay (and – more importantly – making sure that the ‘new’ mobility scooter he has bought to replace his damaged car actually works), I actually managed to finish the draft of my Frontier/Musket Wargames Rules.

The rules are heavily influenced by Joseph Morschauser 'Frontier' and 'Musket' wargames rules (as featured in John Curry's reprint of Joseph Morschauser's HOW TO PLAY WAR GAMES IN MINIATURE) with just a few touches of my own.

The rules are too long to include in a blog entry, but once they have been play-tested and any of the anomalies have been ironed out, I will try to make them available to anyone who would like a copy.

  1. Very interesting, are they a skirmish set?

  2. Ray,

Not really. They are designed to be used with my portable wargame, which is more of a tactical-level wargame.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Hi Bob,

Great to hear that the parental mobility issue is OK - my mother really got some mileage from her scooter - even allowing for some hills where she lived!

I would love a copy of the rules when ready please.

    Many thanks in advance,

    DC

  4. David Crook,

The only problem I had with the mobility scooter was trying to persuade my father-in-law that he did not need to have the speed set on maximum all the time!

I will send you a copy of the rules as soon as they have been play-tested.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Bob,
On Saturday I was the 'victim' of a traffic accident involving a mobility scooter - in the local Nationwide Building Society! As I aproached the counter, where a second position had just opened, I was hit in the back of the legs and pushed against the counter. Had the counter not been there, I would probably have been knocked off my feet. An elderly lady in the queue behind me had turned sharply to negotiate the stand where one can write whilst waiting to reach the position to my right and her scooter swung into me! She was very apologetic; fortunately I was not hurt, just very surprised. It then took her several attempts - during which we other customers flattened ourselves against the walls - to manoeuvre away from the counter to the exit...
Moral: watch out for mobility scooters creeping up behind you!

I, too, would appreciate a set of rules when completed. Thanks.

  8. Arthur1815,

I can sympathise about being hit by mobility scooters as it almost impossible not to have a 'run in' with one at some point during a cruise. They – and their drivers – can be lethal!

On our last cruise, one elderly lady managed to drive into a lift without letting the passengers who were already in it out, caught some part of her ‘machine’ on someone’s dress, and tore the dress when she reversed out again having realised that the lift was going up and not down as she had wanted! No apologies were made … and off she drove at high speed, scattering all those in her path!

On another occasion, the female driver of a mobility scooter managed to get into the lift and hit the button to close the doors with her the edge of the armrest as she drove in. Unfortunately, her husband was left outside the lift when the doors shut, and she could not reach the buttons to select the deck she wanted to go to. She then proceeded to go up and down in the lift for over ten minutes, by which time her husband had managed to catch up with her and take her to the right deck. It appears that she had been too embarrassed to ask for help when people got in and out of the lift.

Finally, on a cruise last year a ‘gentleman’ on a mobility scooter was stopped by the ship’s security people and taken back to his cabin because he had had too much to drink and was becoming a danger to other passengers. It later transpired that the scooter was his wife’s, and that there was nothing actually wrong with him; he was just too lazy to walk around the ship after he had been drinking.

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. I have a dreadful feeling that at some time in the future there will be a game at COW that will involve massed ranks of mobility scooters re-enacting the tank battles around Kursk. It would certainly be in keeping with tradition if it happened!

  9. You could probably make something up for your portable wargame, pitting opposing ranks of scooters. There probably wouldn't be much by way of projectiles, but ramming, gas warfare and periodic confusion would certainly be present. The main problem will be where to get some suitably small scooter models.

    Best regards,

    Chris

P.S. I'd also like a copy of the rules.

  10. Chris,

I am looking for suitable models of mobility scooters ... but as yet none have turned up ... even on eBay!

  11. I know this isn't what you're after, but check this baby out! Talk about firepower...

  12. I did an eBay search under "wheelchair toy", and came up with a number of hits, including this one:

Assuming this is the sort of "scooter" you mean, these would be great once you've cut away the people pushing the wheelchairs.

    Best regards,
    Chris

  13. Chris,

You have done better with your researches than I managed with mine!

Somehow I cannot see me running a game using mobility scooters quite yet ... but give it a few more years (and with a bit more 'greying' amongst wargamers) and the possibility might just be there.

    All the best,

    Bob

  14. Greetings Bob From Texas!

I had asked you at one time for a copy of the Frontier/Musket rules and I think you sent them to me. However, I have been the victim of a total system crash and lost everything. Could you please send me a copy of these rules again? I would GREATLY appreciate it!
