Now this really is nostalgic stuff - I got the wooden village in my Xmas stocking when I was about 8 (definitely not yesterday), so it's been on the market forever, and there was also a farm set which came in a matchbox sized container. They were made in East Germany (where?) or Czechoslovakia (where?) or some such home of Warsaw Pact exotica. The farm had a farmer and a couple of sheep who were all taller than the houses - this was obviously a precursor of my liking for 15mm buildings with my 20/25mm armies. They were definitely the same pattern, the printed stone walls are very distinctive.
ReplyDeleteThe whole idea of solid wooden, "traditional" toys (preferably made in Old Europe), I recall, had a real boom in the 1970s - the Habitat-dwelling Baby Boomers all insisting that their children should like this sort of thing. I also recall that my older sons, from my first family, were unmoved by most of this, and much preferred bits of plastic rubbish out of crackers and Star Wars figures.
I rather wish I still had my village - I like yours a lot!

ReplyDeleteMy younger sister had one of these wooden villages when she was young ... but I was never allowed to 'borrow' if for my wargames.
I have not heard of the farm set before, but I do have the huts from a wooden 'Safari' set that was sold a few years ago by Oxfam. It was very similar in concept to the wooden village, but was made in Africa rather than Eastern Europe (although I suspect that some of the more recent sets are made in China).
Plastic does have its place, but there is something reassuringly solid about wooden toys.

I still have my set from the 1960s and they appear in photos of various games in the Nugget. Richard Brooks has a set too and I'm sure you've either defended some of these charming buildings - or stormed them - in several of our games.

ReplyDeleteThey are very versatile, and I own enough to 'build' several towns if not a city!
I have certainly fought for or in defence of some of Richard Brooks's wooden houses in the past ... and hope to do so again in the future.
As to the African village set ... well I could do with another one or two if they come on sale again.
