Some further hex terrain experiments

Ross Mac suggested that I might consider producing some transitional hex terrain tiles (i.e. terrain tiles that combine features of both the terrain tiles finished with green static grass and those covered in cork granules. The results are show below (the various hex terrain tiles featured in my earlier blog entry are also shown for comparison purposes):

Interestingly the two-hex terrain tiles marked 'A' were given different sized splodges of static grass on top of their cork granules … and either look too bland or rather odd to me.

The two-hex terrain tiles ‘B’ and ‘C’ look much more effective but I am as yet unsure which of the two colours – Graveyard Earth or Camo Green – I will use as the background colour for the transitional tiles, although I currently favour Graveyard Earth.

I like all 3 examples. Variety is the spice of life, and certainly real life terrain shows many variations in texture and colour.

Any way they all look good. Will they stand to play, storage or clumsy dooffii dropping them on the floor ?(Yes, I resemble that last remark!)

  2. Peter Douglas,

    Thanks for the input.

I may well end up making some of each type of transitional tile. As you say, the real world has lots of different textures and colours.

I have used Heroscape terrain tiles in the past, and so far they have survived quite heavy treatment ... including being dropped on the floor. I have not yet stood on one to find out if I can break them, but I suspect that they will survive even that ... and I am hardly a light weight!

    All the best,

  3. Hi Bob,

Varieties of transitional tile would get my vote (if I had one that is!)and all the examples look pretty good.

Very useful for marshes and swampy bayous methinks.

    All the best,

  4. David Crook,

I am going to make some 'normal' tiles first and then make a mixture of transitional tiles ... but I have yet to decide what they will look like.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. I like the right hand side one of 'A' as the best transition - the spotty one looks like part of a formal garden!

As for standing on them - yup survived my weight with no bends / creases or cracks.

  6. ADB,

Thanks for your input. What I need to do is to do a few more experiments ... and with a bit of luck I should be able to do some tomorrow.

As for standing on the Heroscape hexes to see if they will break or not ... well rather you than me!

    All the best,

    Bob
