The latest drafts of Memoir of Battle (MOB) and Memoir of Modern Battle (MOMBAT) now available.

The latest drafts of Memoir of Battle (MOB) and Memoir of Modern Battle (MOMBAT) are now available in PDF format.
I hope to begin play-testing both sets of rules over the next few weeks.

  1. These both look good. Hopefully I'll be able toa arrange myself to test both over the next month.

Since I am likely to try MOB with the ACW or earlier, I've been eyeing the infantry combat dice. There is not a lot of room to maneuver and have fire from muzzle loading rifles and smoothbore muskets be less effective than later weapons but still effective.
The increased density of formations in earlier years also has to be considered as a factor as it would have increased the relative effectiveness of these weapons.

At the moment, I am thinking of treating muzzle loading rifles as Single Shot rifles and rating Smoothbore muskets at 3dice at 1 hex and 1 die at 2 hexes.

In those situations where one side or some units are armed with breachloaders when the majority carry muzzle loaders, I will rate these as if magazine armed for that game.

  2. Ross Mac,

I look forward to reading your play-test battle reports!

What you say with regard to the ACW period makes a lot of sense, and I am sure that what you suggest will work.

David Crook is modifying MOB for the Napoleonic period, and some of his ideas are similar to your own with regard to weapons effectiveness.

The joy of MOB is that it can be modified without too many problems and without becoming more complex in the process.

    All the best,

    Bob
