Soldiers of the Queen (No.147)

Amongst the pile of post that awaited me when I got back was the latest issue of the Victorian Military Society's quarterly publication, SOLDIERS OF THE QUEEN.

I have been a member of the VMS for some years, and I recommend membership to anyone who has an interest in the military history of the mid and late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The latest issue contains articles entitled:
  • Tailors and commission-jobbing: the seamy side of the Victorian army
  • Burnaby the spy: Colonel Frederick Gustavus Burnaby: An unreported trip to Russia and unattached letters from Russia and Turkey
  • Ottoman Uniforms of the Crimean War
  • Vignettes of Victoria's Generals: Field Marshal Hugh H Rose, 1st Baron Strathnairn
  • The Siege and Storming of Delhi, 1857: Overview and Research Bibliography
  • Book Reviews
This looks like being an issue that will be of particular interest to me (I am a member of the unofficial 'Fred Burnaby Fan Club'!), and I look forward to spending time reading it later this week.

  1. Hi Bob,

A timely reminder so my membership has been paid!

No prizes for guessing what I shall look forward to reading though!

    All the best,

  2. David Crook,

Glad to have been of assistance!

The article on Ottoman uniforms is quite interesting, as is the one about Fred Burnaby.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Bob, I have been looking for a long tome for a copy of Ted Herbert's Handbook for Colonial Wargamers, which was published by the VMS in 1976. Do you know if there is any way of acquiring a copy from the society?

  4. The Old Metal Detector,

That booklet has been out of print for a long, long time ... and I doubt that the VMS would be able to supply you with a copy now.

That said, an individual member might have a copy somewhere on their shelves. Are you after a copy of a copy or will only an original do?

    All the best,

    Bob
