Battleships by post

The postal delivery in my area of London has been somewhat erratic of late, and it was therefore something of a surprise when the doorbell went at 7.30am ... and the postman was there with a parcel for me!

I bought three models of 'Gneisenau' from an eBay retailer on Wednesday evening ... and they were delivered this morning, which I think is excellent service from both the seller and the Post Office.

The question that is no doubt forming in your mind is ... why three 'Gneisenau's?

The answer is quite simple:
  • I can build one model straight from the box as 'Gneisenau
  • I can modify one model so that it represents the 'Scharnhorst'
  • I can build one model as 'Gneisenau' but rearmed with 15"/38cm guns (this project was cancelled in 1943 whilst work was underway)
In the latter case the spare gun turrets will probably be used to arm some scratch-built 'pocket battleships'.

More models to add to my growing pile of as-yet-to-be-built 1:1200th-scale model ships!

  3. Hi Bob,

With TGs 5, your 3 and the 3 I have that is a serious quantity of German engineering!

It is a lovely model though with a lot of potential.

    All the best,

    DC

  4. David Crook,

The postman has just delivered a fourth ... which I have been waiting for for over a week and which I thought had been lost in the post!

Between us we can almost field an equivalent to the 'Z' Plan German fleet.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. At least one of the triple 11" turrets is still in place as a coast defence installation in Norway and well preserved as a tourist attraction. A 1:1200 model of it would be more useful than the 1/72 model which appeared on the miniaturespage a while back.

  6. Three Gneisenaus, what could be Gnicer?

Take a look at my own recent post on the topic of Gneisenau

  7. Nigel Drury,

I am hoping to visit it one day. The last time I tried to visit a German Coastal Defence battery in Norway it was so wet that we were advised not to go there by the local Tourist Office on the grounds that it might be too dangerous underfoot.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Stryker,

Thanks for the joke ... and the link. It was a very interesting story that I had not heard before.

    All the best,

  9. I for one cannot fault your logic

I would even add a fourth as a "backup" or just to Arms Race Tim!

  10. Geordie an Exiled FoG,

A fourth has already been ordered and delivered.

    The (arms) race is on!

    All the best,

    Bob
