Encouraging feedback ... generates some more work!

The first draft of my BIG BATTLE PORTABLE WARGAME: MODERN rules seems to have generated quite a bit of interest amongst some of my regular blog readers, and the amount of positive feedback I have had is more than a little encouraging. As a result I am now about to start work on an updated draft that will correct some of the 'errors and omissions' (and typographical errors!) that I have found in the original draft.

In addition to these corrections I intend to add some more optional rules and some air support rules. This will turn BBPW:M into a much bigger set of rules than originally intended (i.e. the wargamer's Holy Grail of a set of rules that will fit onto one side of a piece of paper!) but it will hopefully make them a much better set of rules.

  1. Perhaps two sides is an acceptable maximum, but preferably in large print!

  2. Hi Bob

Like all good rulesets this one should have a quick reference sheet if the main body of the rules extends to more than a page or four.

Am halfway through painting up my 10mm Pendraken Brits and Germans so hope to start playing soon.

  3. My experience is that most 2 page rules rely on unwritten assumptions. I suppose you could extricate all clarifications and definitions etc to the 3rd page which could be left unprinted by those who had grapsed them but I think they are more useful right where they are. Of course once you are at 3 pages youy may as well allow yourself 4 - 2 duplex sheets.

  4. OOps, I forgot to comment on the actual rules. Without having tried them, I like the look of the changes.

I'm still not crazy about the close combat mechanism but the roster should mean that a weaker opponent will normally be destroyed or forced to retreat while the attacking unit is still operational so I think that removes my main criticism.

  5. BC,

I am hoping to produce a booklet containing the rules and a separate playsheet with just the main information on it.

I will try to make the playsheet as small as possible ... and in 12pt font as well ... if I can manage it!

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. Jim Duncan,

I am aiming to produce a short booklet containing all the rules and a separate playsheet that has the main tables etc., extracted from the rules.

I am looking forward to seeing your 10mm-scale stuff on the tabletop.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Ross Mac,

The path I intend to follow is to produce a short booklet containing all the rules and a one or two page playsheet that just covers the essentials. That should satisfy most needs and requirements ... I hope.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Ross Mac,

I spent a lot of time trying to re-work the Close Combat system, but in the end I made a few minor changes and kept it.

I think the changes do cover the point that you made in an earlier comment about Unit survivability ... but it will need playtesting to confirm whether or not I got it right.

    All the best,

    Bob
