Recent acquisitions

Whilst I was on my recent cruise I did manage to acquire some bits and pieces.

Besides the excellent book about the Russo-Japanese War that was given to me by Ross Macfarlane when we met in Halifax (EXCITING EXPERIENCES IN THE JAPANESE-RUSSIAN WAR by Marshall Everett) I bought a book about the early US Navy torpedo boats (BUILDING THE MOSQUITO FLEET: THE U.S. NAVY'S FIRST TORPEDO BOATS by Richard V Simpson and published in 2001 by Arcadia Publishing [ISBN 13 978 0 7385 05084]) and one about THE HALIFAX CITADEL (written by Brian Cuthbertson, with photographs by Julian Beveridge (published in 2001 by Formac Publishing Company Limited [ISBN 0 88780 517 5]).

The visit to the Citadel, Quebec, was very fruitful, and I bought a game (WAR OF 1812 published by Columbia Games Inc.) ...

... and two small cannons that will go very nicely with my FUNNY LITTLE WARS Cordeguayan army.

I also acquired three Booster Packs from the AXIS & ALLIES MINIATURES: ANGELS 20 range in a game and fantasy bookshop in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The aircraft in the packs included a Supermarine Spitfire, a Grumman Wildcat, a North American Mustang, ...

... a Morane-Saulnier MS406, a Hawker Typhoon, a Macchi C200 Saetta, ...

... two Hawker Hurricanes, and Mitsubishi Zero.

The packs cost C$21.99 each, which worked out at approximately £14.60 for each pack and which I thought was quite a reasonable price.

  1. Hi Bob,

Very nice indeed! I like the selection of aircraft you have and Columbia Games are always good to have around. I have Napoleon which is excellent and War of 1812 is a classic in every sense of the word.

That is a fine selection of books as well - lots of inspiration for sure!

    All the best,

    DC

The columbia game is a classic. I am very jealous of the RJW book. I have a similar volume for the Spanish American War. It is very jingoistic., but has great photos.

    Cheers

  3. David Crook,

I was very pleased with what I bought ... and in retrospect I think that I should have bought several more Booster Packs.

The board game looks like it will be an interesting one to play and it is a war that I have not wargamed very much in the past.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. Peter Douglas,

The board games does look very interesting ... as does the book, which has some superb illustrations. I look forward to reading the book in the near future.

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. Chasseur (Jeff),

The only thing that I bought in the US was the book about the 'Mosquito Fleet'; everything else was bought (or gifted to me) in Canada.

Ross Mac is a great bloke, and I would have loved to have spent more time with him ... and in Canada, which my wife and I both loved. As you write, it is a great country!

    All the best,

    Bob
