An answer at last!

I think that it is Murphy's Law that states that 'if something can go wrong, it will do' ... and today has been a fine example of this.

I was wondering why the previously helpful Coroner's Office was not answering their telephones this morning ... when they telephoned me ... and apologised for the problems I might have had contacting them. It transpired that late yesterday the entire computer system in the Coroner's Office had stopped working, and that this had knocked out the telephones as well. They had only just got the system back online at about 10.15am, and were trying to make up for lost time.

They now had the results of the post mortem, and a certificate of death has been issued and will be posted to the Registrar later today. With luck my brother and I will be able to register my father's death on Thursday, and then we can begin to sort out his funeral and his estate.

  1. Hi Bob,

That must be a relief! At least you are now able to tackle the next steps. There is nothing worse that hanging around waiting when you know you have other things to organise.

    All the best,

    DC

  3. David Crook,

I have already begun sorting out with my brother what we can do to progress matters over the next few days. It does seem to involve writing lots of letters and filling out numerous forms ... but at least we know that sorting out my father's estate will be simple and may not require us to apply for probate. If this is the case, we should be able to settle my father's affairs in a matter of weeks rather than months.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. Phil Broeders,

It does not matter how well you prepare for it - or even if you have been through it all before, as I have - the process of dealing with the death of a parent is not a simple or easy one. Your emotions seem to be in a constant state of turmoil, and it is amazing how long seemingly simple tasks can take you to do.

What is great is the help and support that so many people give you ... and this makes the lack of help and understanding you do come across all the more frustrating.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Ah man Bob - so sorry. What a pain in the neck. Its bad enough that you are grieving, and have to take care of your dad's affairs, but to have all of the other crap going on really sucks.

Either way, its cool to find out you have an entire internet of friends you didnt know you had!!!

The response from my regular blog readers to the death of my father has been amazing ... and I cannot thank them enough for the support and comfort their words have given to my family and I.

  10. Johntheone,

If it had been anyone else I might not have believed the reason given ... but I don't think that Coroners are noted for their fibbing!

At least things are moving forward.

    All the best,

    Bob

  11. Glad to hear that things are back on track now.

It must have been awfully frustrating and upsetting for you and for any other families trying to contact the coroner's office at such a difficult time.

  13. TamsinP,

At one point I felt as if my head would explode from stress and frustration ... but the people at the Coroner's Office were so apologetic when I finally spoke to them that I very quickly regained my composure ... and now we can move on.

    All the best,

    Bob

  14. Littlejohn,

I know that it is not going to be a simple or easy task to complete ... but I live in hope that the major problems are now behind us.

    All the best,

    Bob

  15. John Curry,

I am pleased to say that things are at last beginning to move forward. My brother and I have arranged an appointment with the Registrar for tomorrow afternoon, and once we have registered my gather's death it is just a matter of visiting a couple of banks to sort out his accounts prior to the Grant of Probate ... if it is required.

Everything else has been sorted out today, so with a not of luck I can enjoy Easter without having to worry about getting something done by a deadline.

    All the best,

    Bob
