Real life intervenes

When I got up today I had hoped that - at some point during the day - I would be able to write a blog entry about the HEXBLITZ play-test battle that I fought back in 2007 ... and then real life intervened.

What I actually did today was to spend it with my brother, trying to get my father's affairs sorted out. Firstly we visited the care home where my father had lived until he went into hospital. Then we went to see my father in hospital. He had improved somewhat since I last saw him, but he was still very weak. We also engaged in another round in our ongoing battle with the hospital's inefficient bureaucracy. We finished the day by sitting down to draw up a short-list of possible nursing homes that my father can be discharged to when he is fit enough.

My priority for tomorrow is to begin contacting the nursing homes on the short-list in the hope that one of them might have a vacancy. I will then try to visit any that might be able to take him.

It looks like it will be another day of 'real life' tomorrow.

  2. It's not as if 'real life' is much fun, as a rule, neither. You know: when someone trots out the platitude 'no one said life had to be easy', I have to resist the urge to haul off and smack 'em one. With Abe Lincoln, I have to ask myself: 'Why is this thus? What is the reason for this thusness?'

    Nobody answers, though...

  6. As a physician (in the US)who is very active in the affairs of his local hospital, I am sorry to hear how difficult they are making it for you. Illness in the family is never easy (I lost my Dad just short of age 90 last year), but when the system makes it worse unnecessarily, it is very aggravating.

  7. Never an easy time. I hope you can find a good home that can handle his current state. I try not to think about how far away my niece and nephew live or who'll be watching out for me should I make it that far.

  8. Sorry to here about this, Bob. I can surely relate, we went through a similar situation with my dad as his condition went into a steady decline once he reached 90.

Hope things work out for you soon,
    Steve

The occasional reality check does us no harm, but sometimes they come a bit too frequently.

    All the best,

    Bob

I don't mind life being difficult at times ... but sometimes it seems as if it is much more difficult than it need be.

    All the best,

  14. Littlejohn,

It is sometimes difficult for people who don't have to deal with ageing parents to understand just how difficult, time-consuming, and emotionally-debilitating it can be.

Thanks for your support and understanding.

    All the best,

  16. Gonsalvo (Peter),

Almost all the staff in the hospital are doing their best for the patients ... but the bureaucracy seem to do their utmost to make things run for their ease and benefit, regardless of its impact on the care they provide.

What I find incomprehensible is the fact that they can lose a patient's file (or files, in my father's case!) ... and not seem to think that this is something that needs to be rectified as a matter of urgency.

    All the best,

    Bob

  17. Ross Mac,

We think that we have found a very suitable home for my father ... and it is only a few miles away from where I live and less than thirty minutes drive from my brother's house.

As to my own future ... well recent events have given me cause to think about that as well.

    All the best,

    Bob

It is difficult to explain to people who have not gone through this situation just how much of an impact it has on all aspects of your life.

    All the best,

    Bob

We seem to be making a bit of progress at last ... but it will be a few days before we know for sure.
