Rest, recuperation, and reflection

After I hit 'the brick wall' yesterday I realised that the events of the last month or so have taken a rather greater toll on my family and I than I had expected. During that period I have found it difficult at times to motivate myself to do anything ... and that includes both wargaming and blogging.

I had my hoped for 'good night's sleep' last night and a quick cure ... but I don't feel any better today. In fact I feel a bit worse. I suspect that what I need is some time to rest, recuperate, and reflect ... and so that is what I intend to do for the foreseeable future.

One thing I want to do is to go back through my large collection of digital photographs in order to put them into some sort of order, and if I find anything that I think will be of interest, I will write a blog entry (or two) about them.

I hope that this will be a cathartic exercise, and that I will return to my wargaming in due course with increased enthusiasm and vigour. I hope so, as COW2013 is only a few month away ... and I have one or two things that I want to take part in!

  1. I'm sorry I'm late in responding to your last post. I think it is a wise idea to take some time for yourself and get back to an even keel. We all appreciate the work that you do and rest assured that we will be here when you feel up to it in the future. All the best to you and your family.

  2. When is your next cruise, Bob?

They seem to refresh you . . . so is booking a sooner cruise to rest and recuperate a viable option?

  3. Hey, you could always stay in bed all day and follow Don Featherstone's advice about playing games amidst the bedclothes, using Britain's medieval lancers!

    You're in my thoughts--

  4. Bob - I know exactly how you feel. I hit the wall in exactly the same way about a week after my Dad's funeral. To be honest, I've yet to fully recover and get back onto an even keel, but every day is another step closer.

My one word of advice to you - people. Friends, family, ex-colleagues, fellow gamers.. surround yourself with people. I've found that while rest and recuperation is a very attractive idea, I feel the closest I've come to any sense of normality has been when I've been dragged, somewhat reluctantly, into the company of other people.

Good fellowship, I believe, is one of the best forms of medicine there is.

  5. Sorry to hear that you are feeling so flat, it's not surprising in the circumstances.

It sounds like you need some "me" time. I always find figure painting therapeutic; ideally with a good old film and a glass of a nice red wine to hand. And do see some friends, too...

    Cheers, Simon

  6. Bob, looks like you've had plenty of good advice but I'll add some more anyway!

For some reason we tend to accept physical damage and illness and will lie down while we heal but apart from a adrenalin the emotional toll this all takes on a person should also be acknowledged and accepted. By all means sort photos if you like but there is nothing wrong with a couple of naps and some bed or couch rest any more than if you had the flue. Read a book, watch a video with your wife and then in a day or so, take her for lunch or out to a movie or shopping and also call a friend and arrange to meet for lunch for the pleasure of their company.

Hopefully with a bit of R&R you'll be back up to speed all in good time. All the best to you Bob.

  13. Ross Mac,

I have taken the advice that you and so many others have given me … and the effect has been very therapeutic. I am feeling much better than I have for a long time … and am now raring to get started on one or two wargame projects that need my attention.

    All the best,

    Bob

  14. Steve-the-Wargamer,

If my wife had not had other ideas, SALUTE might have been an ideal booster to my sagging morale. Instead she insisted that we went on a long holiday … and the rest – so they say – is history … and will be the basis for some forthcoming blog entries!

    All the best,

    Bob
