L-shaped built-up areas: some more progress at last!

After what seems like an age, I have finally managed to get back to my L-shaped built-up areas project. (It is actually almost three weeks ... but it feels like much longer.)

I decided to finish off the buildings I had already begun rather than start any anew. This involved adding roofs and other details before fixing them onto their triangular bases.

They are shown below in pairs.

When placed together they form quite a sizeable built-up area in which it is quite easy to place troops.

  1. These look the business when put together like that. Very effective town or village to wargame in.

  2. Arquinsiel,

    Thanks for your kind comment.

When seen as individual buildings they don't look very impressive, but when put together they seem to work.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. Mosstrooper,

I hope that they will look even better when they are painted and the bases are flocked.

Looking good. Nice architecture. Now go and bomb them into the stone age.

  6. Looking good so far.

I'm looking forward to seeing a picture of them on the grid with figures beside them for a comparison.

  7. Arthur,

    Thanks for the compliments.

I think that I'll try to finish the buildings first before I bomb them to rubble!

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Ross Mac,

With luck I shall be able to paint and flock them over the few days, and when they are finished I will photograph them on some terrain with some figures to give an indication as to their size.

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. These profiles look superb - and I'm impressed with the way you have added 'depth' to the buildings to give them a 3D look. Set up on your gridded table, they'll look just the deal.

They could just about stand as 'rewins' as is: just some kind of marker to indicate that most of the BUA square as 'rubble', with the buildings simply representing the odd uncollapsed wall.

If your standard basing represent ordered streets and what have you, the 'rubble' could be suitably printed and pasted onto thin cardboard, and overlaid onto the square. Possibly?

  10. Archduke Piccolo,

Funnily enough, the buildings looked rather unimpressive until I began to fix them on to their triangular bases ... and then they seemed to look much better.

I had not thought about depicting ruined versions of the built-up areas, but your suggestion for small piles of rubble on thin card or plywood - possibly with flames and smoke - would be a simple method of showing the partial destruction of the buildings.

    All the best,

    Bob

Rubble markers are the way to go, for sure. They restrict movement and are no-go areas for wheeled and tracked vehicles. Bulldozers can clear them. They are caused by x amount of damage or points attack depending on the rules approach.

And they can be a pain in a large city area.

  12. Arthur,

Your argument is very persuasive and makes a lot of sense ... and it would not be very difficult to make suitable markers.

One more thing to do ...

    All the best,

    Bob

  13. These look very good, sir! I am currently working on a project using facades to surround BUAs, to facilitate villages, church courtyards, and even locations such as La Haye Sainte and Hougoumont. These will allow me to place stands of figures inside, but without having overly large footprint buildings to take up table space.

  14. Justin Penwith,

I think that there are several of us working along similar lines with regard to creating built-up areas that are 2D/3D facades within which figures etc., can be placed.

I - and others like me - would be interested to see what your facades look like.

    All the best,

    Bob

  15. My camera is currently down, but I hope to have it sorted in about a month. I will post samples of my efforts at that time.
