Inside the boxes of Green Army Men

I finally managed to open the two boxes of Green Army Men that I bought in Hawkin's Bazaar ... and this was what was inside:

The boxes contained:
  • 5 Officers with binoculars
  • 6 Officers/NCOs with Walkie-Talkies
  • 3 Officers/NCOs with submachine guns
  • 4 Heavy Machine Guns and Gunners
  • 7 Anti-tank Gunners with shoulder-held anti-tank weapons
  • 7 Engineers with flamethrowers
  • 8 Infantrymen throwing grenades (they might also be suitable for conversion to Mortar crewmen or Artillerymen)
  • 2 Infantrymen, kneeling, firing
  • 5 Infantrymen,standing, firing
  • 7 Infantrymen, lunging downwards
  • 7 Infantrymen, advancing
  • 3 Infantrymen, crawling
I am not quite sure what this force would equate to in LITTLE COLD WARS terms, but I would have thought that it was probably about equivalent to a battalion.

I am going to be quite busy over the next couple of weeks, but I hope to begin painting these figures at the end of June so that they will be ready by the middle of July.

  1. A NATO-style battalion runs to about 40 figures. The WARPACT equivalent about 30. There are a couple of sample orbats in the 'Files' section of the Little Cold Wars Yahoo group.

  2. I gave a bundle of these sort of figures, unpainted and suitably sterilised to a friend of my wifes son who is not allowed 'proper' toys, only educational ones. I hope he gets to play with them from time to time.

  4. Hi Bob
Gosh - these remind me very much of the style of figures that used to come as free gifts in cereal packets in the 1960's - do you remember shaking the box around to get whatever gift was in it out before anyone else? I wonder why they stopped doing that - perhaps it created too many wargamers! I think that Cornflakes and weetabix were the main ones - but my memory isn't great. I do remember a series that resembled and were to the same style and scale as the original series 1 British army figures - hopelessly crude - but free!! kind regards Ken

  5. These look just like the "Matchbox" US Army figures that I still have somewhere. How big are they? The Matchbox figures are the classic AIRFIX "HO/OO" size, i.e notional 20 mm

  6. Oh dear! Oh dear! Oh dear! When I saw your earlier post about these men I was immediately tempted. Now I have seen how nice they look in your latest pic. I know I will not be able resist buying some. The wargaming butterfly within me is getting the upper hand again. Even though I had no intention to do any modern games and certainly not at ths scale!

  7. Matchbox did their WW2 figures in 1/32 as well. There are a lot of Chinese copies of them and of Airfix. Some are very good copies whilst others are crude but it looks like these are good ones.

  9. Tim Gow,

That is very helpful. I suspect that my Trigon Aggressor troops will be organised along WARPAC lines.

    All the best,

    Bob

  10. Jim Duncan,

Good for you! Toy Soldiers are educational ... and children should not be stopped from using them.

    All he best,

  11. Sean,

Little Cold Wars seems to be closer - in terms of figures and equipment -
to the sort of wargames I played when I was young, and I think that you will enjoy reading about them.

    All the best,

    Bob

  12. Ken H,

The good old cereal packet plastic toy soldiers! I loved the anticipation of what you might get ... and nine times out of ten it was something I never found a use for.

    All the best,

    Bob

  13. Ian Dury,

They are very similar to the Airfix US Marine set, but in 54mm-scale.

    All the best,

    Bob

  14. Alan Charlesworth,

I must admit that I found the prospect of a Little Cold Wars project irresistable, especially when I saw these figures. I therefore sympathise with your predicament.

    All the best,

    Bob

  15. James O'Connell,

These are good quality 'Chinese copies' and are made from a fairly rigid plastic. With luck this should make them retain their paint.

    All the best,

    Bob

These are very nice figures ... and I look forward to using them.
