I used the boxcar that came with the train set as the basis of the high-sided wagon.
I removed the wheels (they popped out quite easily) and I then used a razor saw to carefully remove the false wheels that were moulded onto the boxcar's wheel flanges.
Using the moulded line just below the roof as a guide, I carefully sawed the roof of the boxcar off.
I then glued two 6.3cm-long pieces of plastic strip inside the frame of the carriage to strengthen it and to provide something to glue the floor of the wagon to.
Once the glue had cured, I carefully cut a piece of Plasticard to the right size, and glued it in place.
The main re-modelling work on the boxcar was now complete, and the high-sided wagon was ready to be painted.

ReplyDeleteI don't know whether you have anything planned for the off cuts and discarded bits, but I have a feeling the cut off bits of the locomotive might form the basis of a second loco; and the off cut moulded wheels, especially if you can fine tyres for them, into pretty handy sort of wheels for other types of vehicles. Something for the 'bits box' at any rate.

ReplyDeleteI am very pleased that you have enjoyed this series of blogs. I have several more planned, and these will extend the range of locos and wagons that I will have available to use.
I have kept all the off cuts from my remodelling and I am planning to recycle quite a few of them ... as will become apparent over the next week or so.
Your idea for reusing the wheels is not one I had thought about before, but from now on I will try to find a use for them.
