Boomerang

Ever since we returned from our cruise last month, my wife and I have been suffering from what can best be described as a boomerang virus. Every few days we seem to develop flu-like symptoms (e.g. a general feeling of lethargy, headache, muscular pain, difficulty with concentration, constantly changing body temperature) which pass off after a couple of days ... only for the symptoms to return again a few days later.

One consequence of this has been that I have not felt inclined to do much in the way of blogging and/or wargaming as I did earlier in the year. With luck – and appropriate treatment – we will eventually shake off this virus and return to normal. In the meantime we are taking things one day at a time and doing what we can when we feel up to doing it.

  1. Obviously with you and your good lady being at sea so much you have developed 'scurvy'. The only answer is to eat more greens and take lime juice.

Or maybe a quick trip to your GP might help.

  2. Jim Duncan,

I have been called a scurvy knave before ... but have yet to contract the illness!

It appears that this boomerang virus is affecting quite a few people in our area, and that my wife and I aren't the only cases. The recommended treatment involves taking plenty of rest, keeping hydrated ... and including lots of vitamin C in our diet. So your advice about eating greens and taking lime juice is not that wide of the mark!

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Slice of lemon and slices of fresh ginger in hot water. Couple of cups a day. Does wonders. I've avoided all the plagues over winter!

  4. Andy McMaster,

Sounds like an interesting - and refreshing - way to keep the bugs at bay.

This year my wife and I should have had free anti-flu jabs, but somehow we missed out, although I understand that it has not stopped the flu bug that has been doing the rounds in the UK this year from making itself felt.

We are both looking forward to better health in the near future.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Bob,
Based upon my reading of Peninsular War memoirs, I fear you may have the quartidian ague, but at least it's not the Walcheren Fever, which is far more debilitating and prevented its sufferers from serving at Waterloo.
    Get well soo!

  6. Go see your GP! Best not to ignore these things. You might also want to check on a CO detector...bit paranoid I know, but I had a friend who had similar symptoms from a dodgy boiler.

The lemon and ginger cure works best when enhanced with whisky! Get well soon both of you.

  7. Arthur1815, (Arthur),

I looked up quartidian ague ... and hope that it is NOT what we are suffering from!

Mind you, we are both feeling a lot better today, and with a bit of luck we are finally getting over whatever caused it.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Alastair,

Trying to get an appointment with our GP requires more luck than winning on the National Lottery! Last time I tried I had to wait a week, by which time I was better and cancelled the appointment that I had made.

We have just had our annual gas boiler overhaul and check, and they also recommended installing a CO detector/alarm. I intend to buy one the next time I visit B&Q ... just in case.

    All the best,

    Bob
