A copy of Nigel Thomas's HITLER'S RUSSIAN & COSSACK ALLIES 1941-45 was delivered in yesterday's post.
The book was illustrated by Johnny Shumate and published by Osprey Publishing as part of their 'Men-at-Arms' series No.502 (ISBN 978 1 4728 0687 1).
I have a long-standing interest in the Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War, and this book fills an interesting niche in my book collection. I already knew a bit about the Russians who fought for Hitler (for example, that some had served on Jersey and others had fought in Normandy), but this book adds considerably more to my understanding and knowledge.

ReplyDeleteThe sheer number of Russians who served in the German armed forces is staggering, and they represented a significant part of the frontline strength of quite a few German formations even at the end of the war.

My first knowledge of the Russia involvement on the Axis side grew out of receiving a pair of 54mm Imry-Risley Cossacks in German service, in about 1970. Very interesting subject matter.

ReplyDeleteWhen one looks at the variety of nationalities fighting against the Soviets, it is truly staggering ... and yet, how often are they represented in a wargame? Hardly ever.
