Building modular fortifications: Part 5 - Adding some more parapets

Ross Mac commented that it was a pity that I had not been able to add parapets to all the sides of my modular towers, and after giving the matter some thought, I agree with him ... so I did!

David Crook had already suggested that I might be able to use some of the walls from my numerous sets of 'Village in a bag' wooden buildings, and after a search I found enough of them to use to make parapets for my towers and the gateway.

As a result my towers and the gateway now look like this:

These are much more satisfactory to look at and I can still get one of my units bases on top of them.

  1. Excellent! Now if an attacker manages to escalade a wall the towers will limit any advance along the wall. It might also be possible to position the towers projecting forward and add a rule for supporting fire from the tower against enemy attacking a wall.

Do you have enough bits lying about to be able to remove 1 section and replace it with a breached section? (aka a base containing a pile of rubble to keep it simple.)

    Excitement mounts!

  2. I think we need to see these in action...

  3. Good progress on your blockhouse. Do you plan to cover the entire structure in stucco or plaster and then either paint it or leave a natural color?

  4. Indeed..plan to have mine too. I can't wait :)

  5. Ross Mac,

The towers will project slightly more than the wall sections, so supporting fire from them should be possible.

I think that I will have enough off-cuts etc. to be able to make at least one length of breached wall ... so thanks again for the suggestion!

    All the best,

  6. Conrad Kinch,

Don't worry, I hope to have to all or part of my modular fortress in action by Christmas at the latest.

    All the best,

  7. Jonathan Freitag,

I am going to seal the surface of the wood with PVA glue, after which I will paint it. I hope to be able to use masonry paint which contains a bit of texture, but if I can't get hold of any, I may well try to find some other way of texturing the surface before I paint the whole thing.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Kev,

Many thanks. I am very pleased with the way this project has turned out, and can see myself using a similar construction process to make other structures as well.

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. Klouse Gray,

Good luck with building you own version. I hope you enjoy doing it as much as I have.

    All the best,

  10. Bob, I have textured severall buildings by sprinkling a little bit of fine sand onto the white glue before it dries.

  11. Ross Mac,

That is a very interesting suggestion.

In the past I have added sand to paint to produce a textured finish, but not used it with glue before. I might give it a try as that would mean that I could use normal paint rather that masonry paint to paint the modules.

    All the best,

    Bob

  12. I've bought masonry paint in B&Q a few years back.

Interesting build - might get some of those blocks myself!

  13. Xaltotun of Python (Rob),

I usually buy my masonry paint at Homebase, it's closer!

I'll be interested to hear how your version of a modular fortress turns out.

    All the best,

    Bob

  14. My last fortress was made of card and was a teaching aid - a castle with pyramids on top of each tower and cuboid nets for walls. Seemed to work quite well.

  15. Xaltotun of Python,

It sounds very impressive ... although you lost me when you mentioned 'cuboid nets'!

    All the best,

    Bob
