Armies of the War of the Pacific 1879-83

A copy of Osprey's newly-published ARMIES OF THE WAR OF THE PACIFIC 1879-83: CHILE, PERU & BOLIVIA was delivered in Wednesday's post.

The book was written by Gabriele Esposito and illustrated by Giuseppe Rava, and was published by Osprey Publishing as part of their 'Men-at-Arms' series No.504 (ISBN 978 1 4728 1406 7).

I have a long-standing interest in the wars of South America, and already have several books about this conflict. Buying this book wasn't necessary ... but having read it, it was well worth the money it cost and will no doubt prove to be a very useful reference book in the future.

  2. Trebian,

Sorry, old chap ... I pre-ordered my copy from Osprey via Amazon, who posted it out so that it arrived on the day of publication.

You'll enjoy it when it does arrive.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Ross Mac,

I don't think that you will be disappointed ... and I'd give serious consideration to buying the Osprey about the War of the Triple Alliance (Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay vs. Paraguay) as well if I were you.

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. My copy has just arrived. I, too, pre-ordered only through the Book Depository. Not an issue really as it needs to go on to the pile to read. Initial reaction is that the pictures are nice, - although not much different to those in the Partisan Press book. The maps are good in terms of clearly showing the locations and what's a stake. The campaign summaries are just that, - summaries.

Bibliography has some English language books I wasn't aware of. The text includes sections on tactics by army, so that should be interesting.

  7. Trebian,

Compared to the cost of the Partisan Press book, the Osprey seems quite cheap, and although not as detailed, it is a good primer for the subject. I have a few of the books listed in the bibliography ... and one that isn't, 'The Royal Navy and the Peruvian-Chilean War 1879 - 1881' by Rudolf de Lisle.

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. Trebian,

I bought mine soon after it was published, and enjoyed both the illustrations and the text. I found the images of the coastline particularly interesting.

    All the best,

    Bob
