The Waterloo Project: The next stage?

From the end of February to the middle of August last year a large chunk of my time was taken up with my Waterloo Project. It culminated in what I termed a 'A Grand Review', and at the time I had plans to add a few more figures to the collection as and when I could. (These included figures some from Del Prado's RELIVE AUSTERLITZ that I managed to buy via eBay.) To date I have made no progress in either adding the additional figures or using the ones that I have varnished and based in a wargame ... but I have acquired a lot more figures thanks to Stuart Asquith and Tim Gow!

Back in early March I visited Stuart Asquith and took delivery of his collection of Del Prado RELIVE WATERLOO figures, and in the middle of the month Tim Gow managed to buy one hundred and fifty figures for me from the 'bring-and-buy' at TRIPLES. I have yet to take delivery of the latter, but during a lull in my current model ship building project I finally managed to have a serious look at the figures I got from Stuart ... and these can be seen below:

By the time I have varnished and based all these additional figures, my collection will be much larger than I ever envisaged it would be ... and I really will have start wargaming with them!

It will certainly enable me to add quite a few more units to my existing collection.

      All the best,

  2. Bob, you have a splendid collection that deserves to see some action rather than languishing in their boxes!
I recently came across a print'n play game called Waterloo Squares which uses a square grid. Troops are portrayed by counters, but you could easily enlarge the size of the gameboard and deploy bases of figures instead.
If you're interested, email me and I'll send you the files.
    Best wishes, Arthur

    1. Arthur1815 (Arthur),

You are right ... but I have one or two other projects that I want to finish before I really begin using these figures. (The old wargamers lament; too many projects and too little time!)

The rules sound interesting and I would certainly appreciate a copy of them. Are they related to the ACW game that has a similar name?

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Bob,
Waterloo Squares sent to your wargamer1950 email address - I hope that is okay?

Thanks very much. I look forward to reading them and giving them a go ... when the opportunity arises.

  3. Wow- this is quite a haul BOB. Add Stuart's Collection with that of Tim's Find - and indeed you have an enormous Collection. Well done indeed. Regards. KEV.

    1. Kev,

Once I have re-based all the figures to match my existing collection, I estimate that it will include something between 750 and 800 figures. That should be enough for my needs for the foreseeable future.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. What's this 'enough' concept you mention. I'm not familiar with it....

    3. Tim Gow,

Enough is an expression I use when my wife asks how many more toy soldiers I will need!

  4. That's starting to be a real Napoleonic Collection! :-)
(my own exceeds 6500 28mm figures, acquired/painted over 40 years, and will likely top out at about 7K when I am "done".)

    1. Gonsalvo,

I only began seriously collecting Napoleonic figures when the Del Prado part-work RELIVE WATERLOO came out some years ago. I put the figures into storage as they were delivered, and intended to use them once the part-work ended ... but I didn't.

I only got them out if storage when I was discussing with a fellow wargamer the fact that I had never re-fought the Battle of Waterloo ... and discovered that he hadn't as well. We agreed that we really ought to 'do' the great battle, and I agreed to varnish and base my figures so that we could. Since then the collection has grown ... and we still haven't re-fought Waterloo yet!

7,000 figures will be quite some collection ... and I must admit to a degree of envy!

      All the best,

      Bob

I hope that you won't be disappointed!

  5. Dear Bob, good to hear that I am not alone in the diplomatic management of the internal security forces. The only answer is, I think from Harry Pearsons book, " you can never have enough of something you did not need in the first place". If no wargame pending with this collection, how about a review ?

    1. Chris Platt,

I do my best on the diplomatic front ... not always successfully!

Harry Pearson's book occupies a place on honour on my bookshelves, especially as it is the ONLY book that ever caused me to fall out of bed because I was laughing so much when I was reading it.

I did do a grand review of the figures I have varnished and based last year ... and I will repeat the exercise when I have added these figures.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. That is quite the addition. You may have to move the game outside!

One advantage of being married to someone who breeds show dogs is that my collection may be more numerous but requires less food and looking after.

    1. Ross Mac,

Wargaming outside would certainly enable me to use the entire, enhanced collection; the only problem is the fact that our garden is on a 1:10 slope.

Thinking about the cost of owning animals made me realise that my wargaming probably costs less per week than our one cat costs to fed, insure, and keep healthy! I shall remember that the next time I am taken to task about my 'expensive' hobby.

      All the best,

      Bob
