I have had several requests to publish some photos of my two completed battle-fleets of toy-like model ships ... so here they are!

- Four pre-dreadnought battleships
- Two armoured cruisers
- Three protected cruisers
- Four torpedo boat destroyers
This was an impressive arms race leading to two fine fleets.

I am hoping to use numbered and coloured flags to differentiate the ships in each fleet.

Beautifully done, Bob ! I too would have looked for more differentiation with say, one side in a more colorful livery. But the flags should do the trick. I look forward to the battle report.

DeleteI had originally hoped to paint the two fleets in slightly different variants of the 'Victorian' colour scheme, but decided to go for grey ... for the time being.
I am currently looking at making small enough flags to differentiate the two sides, but I am giving serious thought to painting the tips of the masts in red or blue as well.
The battle reports (there were several play-test battles yesterday and one will hopefully take place this morning) should - with a bit of luck - appear later today.

I realize this is a bit late in coming but I saw something this week that made me think of your wooden fleet.
ReplyDeleteMy eldest son (13 years old) has a little display of Lego models he's built in his room. I was admiring his latest work when he showed me a little fleet of his own. Thy had a very sci-fi look to them but he had built a couple aircraft carriers with (very abstract) aircraft, a battleship and what could best be described as a cruiser.
I looked around on the internet and saw that many people have built wargaming miniatures from Lego.
Just thought I'd share and maybe give you some ideas for future little wars.

DeleteThanks for the suggestion. In fact a friend and I once staged a naval battle on the lawn at COW between British and Russian pre-dreadnoughts that were made from LEGO. (My friend has a huge collection of the stuff!) The joy of using LEGO was that damage could be shown by removing bits from the models.
It sounds as if your son is showing all the signs of becoming a wargamer, and I hope that you are able to encourage him.
