Fleet review ... or two!

I have had several requests to publish some photos of my two completed battle-fleets of toy-like model ships ... so here they are!

Each battle-fleet comprises:
  • Four pre-dreadnought battleships
  • Two armoured cruisers
  • Three protected cruisers
  • Four torpedo boat destroyers
I hope that this will be enough vessels to enable quite large actions to be fought as well as the numerous smaller sea battles and skirmishes that take place during a war.

  1. This was an impressive arms race leading to two fine fleets.

Is there a way to distinguish the ships of the same class from each other? or for that matter is there a way to dustinguish opposing fleets?

    1. Ross Mac,

I am very please with the way they have turned out.

I am hoping to use numbered and coloured flags to differentiate the ships in each fleet.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Dick Bryant,

The two fleets are currently painted in the same colour scheme, and I hope to use coloured and numbered flags to differentiate ships and fleets from each other.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Hi Bob,

Magnificent looking! They have that quintessential old school charm and will look suitably imposing in action. I also think that using them in one or more of your legendary combined operations games would be a great idea as well.

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

Thanks very much for your kind comment.

I must admit that now they are finished my thoughts have turned to using them in a land-sea campaign ... but that is something for the future.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. William Stewart,

Cheers! Whilst each individual model ship may not be perfect, when seen together they look quite impressive.

A battle report should follow later this week.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. Excellent! Your work has paid off in 2 wonderfully crafted one of a kind fleets. And seeing them all together (in 2 photos) makes me realize how many ships you built!

    1. Kev,

I have just finished fighting my first play-test battle, and have another two or three to fight before I can 'sign off' on the rules. Once that is done, I will write a battle report on my blog.

      All the best,

      Bob

  10. Whatever you do don't be tempted to build a Dreadnought or the whole arms race will begin again! Two very fine fleets you have there.

    1. Stryker,

Thanks for the very kind compliment.

I have been tempted to build something with more firepower ... but or the present I am sticking to pre-dreadnoughts and ironclads!

      All the best,

      Bob

  11. Beautifully done, Bob ! I too would have looked for more differentiation with say, one side in a more colorful livery. But the flags should do the trick. I look forward to the battle report.

    1. Corporal_Trim,

I had originally hoped to paint the two fleets in slightly different variants of the 'Victorian' colour scheme, but decided to go for grey ... for the time being.

I am currently looking at making small enough flags to differentiate the two sides, but I am giving serious thought to painting the tips of the masts in red or blue as well.

The battle reports (there were several play-test battles yesterday and one will hopefully take place this morning) should - with a bit of luck - appear later today.

      All the best,

      Bob

  12. I realize this is a bit late in coming but I saw something this week that made me think of your wooden fleet.
My eldest son (13 years old) has a little display of Lego models he's built in his room. I was admiring his latest work when he showed me a little fleet of his own. Thy had a very sci-fi look to them but he had built a couple aircraft carriers with (very abstract) aircraft, a battleship and what could best be described as a cruiser.
I looked around on the internet and saw that many people have built wargaming miniatures from Lego.
Just thought I'd share and maybe give you some ideas for future little wars.

    1. Mr Pavone,

Thanks for the suggestion. In fact a friend and I once staged a naval battle on the lawn at COW between British and Russian pre-dreadnoughts that were made from LEGO. (My friend has a huge collection of the stuff!) The joy of using LEGO was that damage could be shown by removing bits from the models.

It sounds as if your son is showing all the signs of becoming a wargamer, and I hope that you are able to encourage him.

      All the best,

      Bob
