The Colonial Wargaming Website: The end of an era ... and possibly the beginning of another

One of my first forays into putting something online was my Colonial Wargaming website. I began it back in the early noughties, and until 2010 I regularly updated and added to it. Since then, however, it has been very much on my wargaming back-burner, and I have now decided that I can no longer afford to pay for it to be hosted by its current website hosting service. (The cost is approximately £150.00 per year; not a lot on money in the great scheme of things, but it is money wasted if I am not continuing to use and update the website.)

At some point next month the website will no longer be available to view online. Once that has happened I will give some thought to finding another way for the data contained therein to be made available to anyone who wants to use it ... but it will not in the form of a website. One possibility is to turn some of the website's pages into PDFs that can be stored and downloaded, and that is one direction in which my thinking is taking me.

So it is the end of an era ... but possibly the beginning of another.

  1. Hi,

That website was how I first found your blog, it was good motivation for me when getting back into colonial gaming. Thanks a lot for you work. Cheers Paul

    1. Jacko (Paul),

I am really pleased that it helped to revive your interest in colonial wargaming.

I understand that the Colonial Wargaming website has already been 'cloned' onto one of the archives that tries to keep copies of interesting websites, so it will still be accessible in the future.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. The end of an era.

Your idea of pdfs is a good one but a fair amount of work. Luckiky, as long as you save all the files that compose the website you don't need to decide which if any bits to republish.

    1. Ross Mac,

It is indeed the end of an era ... but as things change, we need to change with them.

I have already experimented with turning the various types of website pages into PDFs, and it is not too time consuming or tedious. It will also give me the opportunity to prune/enhance some of the information therein.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Let me second Jacko's comments I too found your blog, and your rules by the circuitous route of "FreewargamesruleUK", to "McDuff meets Morschauser", to googling "Morschauser", and realizing he authored the wargame book i had so wanted as a child, to finding many links between that author and yourself, many contained in your Colonial Wargaming site. I am glad you are 'archiving' the site. I derived a lot of enjoyment from it.

    1. Steven Page (Steve),

I am very pleased to read that you enjoyed visiting my website.

Whatever happens, the content of my colonial wargaming website will not be 'lost' to the wider world: I invested far too much time and effort in it for that to happen! I will certainly try to get the whole thing archived where potential visitors can find it, and the contents will be revamped as and when I have the time to do it.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Bob... you could consider opening another blog under your own account and then adding the content of the Colonial site as "pages"...??

    1. Steve-the-Wargamer,

It is one of the options I am considering. I already have a Colonial Wargaming blog that I could use, and I may develop that as possible access point to the data from the website.

      All the best,

      Bob
