Stephen Briddon has been using my PORTABLE WARGAME rules since before they were published, and was one of the wargamers who gave me very useful feedback during their development. He has continued to use them, and what follows are some photographs of some of his battles.

Bob was too kind to show my games. Most of the infantry are Airfix (both scales). Large scale tanks are Classic Toy Soldiers, artillery are either Britain’s or Tamiya. I went for those easy assemble jobs for the small scale because I’m all thumbs and have no patience.
DeleteStephen, the games look absolutely fantastic! Almost makes me wish I had stuck with the 1/32 CTS armor instead of the 1/43-1/50 stuff.

DeleteI love the simple but very effective figures and vehicles you use in your battles. I have a fair number of 'ready to use' vehicles in my collection, and they are better painted than some of the ones I did.

I was actually wishing I had 1/48 scale vehicles, but they are too spendy. I did toy (no pun) with the idea of making my own. I came across this jolly website https://petite-infanterie.blogspot.com, and it doesn’t look to hard. Of course I can also be glad of what I have.

The games are so few and far between, and I’m not sure I have anything to say beyond what has already been said. Of course if I had more time, you wouldn’t be able to shut me up.

ReplyDeleteWell I am a lucky boy and received your first book for Xmas and the second is on it’s way for my birthday in January. I have played a single game before the book arrived using the modern hexed rules off the web , a couple of aspects in them puzzled me , especially as they differ from the rules presented in the book ?
There is a Close Combat table in the download rules that do not appear in the book ?
The Resolving Unit hits and Status in the download rules does not impact on the SP of a unit ? I think in the book that is referred to as Quick Death ?
However this is all good fun and keep up the good work.
Not sure this is the right place to post this ? although it is relevant to Portable Wargame , just not to this splendid post !

DeleteI hope that you enjoy reading both books and using the rules they contain.
The rules that are online are an early draft, and were developed into the version in the book, hence the changes. Over time I removed the 'Sudden Death' element from the basic rules and made it an option for players who wanted a quick battle. Likewise the changes to the Close Combat mechanism.
