The periodic sort out ... is sort of finished ... for the moment

I have just finished the periodic sort out I began yesterday and I have finished ... for the time being. The toy/wargame room now looks like this:

During the process of sorting out the detritus that seems to have accumulated over the last couple of years, I have realised that I must seriously consider downsizing my current stock of figures etc. I have figures, buildings, and other wargaming bits-and-pieces that have not seen the light of day for years ... and are not likely to again in the foreseeable future.

So why keep them? If I can sell them or pass them on to someone who will use them, it will free up space in my toy/wargame room and generate a bit of cash to spend enhancing the collections that I do keep.

I am going to wait until after Christmas before I do anything further, but it is something that I now know that I have to do.

For those that are interested, the photograph above shows some (56 to be precise!) of my REALLY USEFUL BOXES in use. The majority are 4 litre boxes, with a few larger ones used where necessary.

  1. How can you possibly be creative in such a tidy space? :)

You should see my office ... which is where I do my writing! It is a real tip with stuff strewn everywhere!

      All the best,

    2. I'm thousands of miles away yet that room seems some how all to familiar....odd lol
Now if I could only keep the cat off the table!

    3. Don M,

I wonder how similar most wargame rooms are?

Our cat was in the room when this photograph was taken; it was sitting under the chair on the extreme right-hand side. It likes to be there during the colder months as it can get close to the radiator, but has never shown any interest in what is going on elsewhere in the room.

      All the best,

      Bob

    4. Mine's currently a pile of boxes stuff in the middle of the floor. But then we did just move and I am taking bids to renovate the new room. The cats love it right now because there are so many places to hide and things to bat around the floor (not figures thankfully).

    5. Pat G,

Moving is something that I know that I am going to have to do someday ... and I'm not particularly looking forward to the disruption. That's aid, I may well end up with an even better wargame room, so it might be worth it.

I hope that renovation goes well, and that you are unpacked and wargaming again so.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Very tidy. I have never been that organised - certainly not matching storage boxes that actually stack!!!
Well done - a major achievement.

It is tidy ... for the moment!

It took me years to realise that I had to have some sort of organisation in my storage system so that I could find what I was looking for. It is not perfect, but it is much better than just having piles of different-sized boxes everywhere.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Bob,
Well - that IS an amazingly neat collection- well done...I have two large cupboards with doors and lots of shelves in my shed/workshop/games area...still I can see a need for stackable plastic containers as you have been employing. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson,

Your system sounds very like what I used to have, but I found that the stuff on shelves got very dusty and the cupboards ended up full of unlabelled boxes of all shapes and sizes. When we had the loft conversion done some fifteen years ago and I finally got my own toy/wargame room, I decided to go for a combination of stackable storage boxes and draw units for my figures and bookshelves with doors for my books. As long as I keep it reasonably tidy, I can find things fairly quickly when I need them.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Good points Bob - I was just going to re-purpose the old kitchen cabinets. Food for thought.

    3. Pat G,

I wish that REALLY USEFUL BOXES had been around longer than they have. That have served me well and I have plans to buy more in due course.

  4. Very tidy - I have spread into 4 rooms in the house, though 2 of those mostly have Black Hat Miniatures paint stock, casting machines, etc in them. I have been told that is the absolute limit!

I really need to go through all my waqrgames stuff and thin it - I have sold a lot off in the past few years that hadn't been used but feel I should clear some more space for the collections I want.

    1. Mike Lewis,

Four rooms is not that unreasonable when two of them are for your business.

I think that we all reach a time in our lives when we realise that more needs to become less if we are to use what we have. I am determined to have a serious look at my collections, and to pass them on as gifts or sales to others who can use them. Better that then they sit in storage boxes unused.

      All the best,

      Bob

It is ... at the moment. If it is still as tidy by the beginning of next year, I will be surprised!

  6. Very neat and orderly Bob- do you not need to label your boxes so you know what is in them all?

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    1. Pete.,

Because the boxes are opaque, you can see what it inside most of them from the end. That said, I have used labels on the end of some of the trays.

  7. Selling off items that haven;t seen the light of day during many years is a good idea. Recently, I decided to get rid of all my boardgames. Although it is fun to *own* them, what use is there if you don't play with them? "Ah, but the memories!". The memories will still be there, whether that game is hodden ina cupboard or not.

    1. Phil Dutré,

It does make a lot of sense to get rid of figures etc., that I am very unlikely ever to use again. It would certainly clear some space in my toy/wargame room, and as you state in you comment, I'll still have the memory of having used them and the knowledge that someone else is enjoying them now.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. Wow that is a lot of boxes Bob
My wife always comments when she looks up in the loft' "I don't think they are Xmas decorations are they?"

    1. Geordie an Exile FoG,

It might be a lot if boxes ... but there are even more that aren't in the photograph!

Funnily enough our Christmas decorations are stored in REALLY USEFUL BOXES in our loft ... or what is left of it since we had our loft conversion done.

      All the best,

      Bob
