My American Civil War ironclads are finished

I finished painting my two new model American Civil War ironclads yesterday ... and this is what they look like:

With luck I should be able to see how well they perform in action later this week. I will not be writing a detailed blog entry about any battle I fight as I intend to include it in my forthcoming book about gridded naval wargames, but I will share any interesting photographs that I take.

  2. Bob,
Very nice vessels - you have done a great job with them.
It will be good to see the ACW Naval action. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson,

Thanks very much for your kind comment. The design of both models is quite simple, and can easily be adapted to represent other vessels.

      All the best,

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! Unlike most of my other wooden model ships where the turrets are fixed, the turret on the Monitor does turn.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. I've got to say, if it can be said, that those are the cutest warships I've ever seen!

  5. I always think of ACW ironclads being very dark but I really don 't know much about them and these look good as they are.

    1. Ross Mac,

I think that they should be very dark grey or even black ... but as I want to use them in photographs, I chose to paint them medium grey as this will look better in monochrome images.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Definitely very cute. Shades of Thomas the Tank Engine...Ian the Ironclad perhaps :)

Seriously though I'm very impressed.. .I'm completely cack-handed when it comes to building stuff.

    1. Alastair,

You've understood the thinking behind my ship models!

I try to use construction methods that are as simple as possible, and I'd be surprised if you couldn't replicate them.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. David Crook,

Thanks very much for your kind words. Assuming that I can finish writing the Dreadnought version of my PW Naval rules, I should be using these two ships in action by the end of the week.

      All the best,

      Bob
