A good idea is always worth 'borrowing'

I have been following Archduke Piccolo's recent blog entries about how he organises the armies he is going to use for some operational-level wargames.

He is using small dice holders and D6 dice as a means of recording a unit or formation's current strength point, and I liked the idea so much that I though that I would give it a try. I paid a quick visit to the Warbases website, placed an order ... et voila, everything that I needed arrived in the post yesterday!

I have yet to glue the dice holders to the small bases that I ordered for them, but that should not be too onerous a task. Once that is done I will probably paint them to match the figure bases I use ... but I don't nee to rush that as they will be usable 'as is' until I get around to it.

The Internet is a wonderful place for finding ideas that are worth 'borrowing', and in this case I must thank Archduke Piccolo for inspiring me to copy his example.

  1. You should look out for sets of Travel Rummikub is you want numerical markers behind units. I find those dice in holders still get knocked over.

    1. Trebian,

I've tried using numbered, magnetic markers as per MEGABLITZ and loose dice. This seemed like a good idea that was worth trying. That said, I'll bear your suggestion in mind if the dice holders don't work.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. The Warbases site has some great products. Will you be putting these markers to use soon Bob?

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

All my MDF bases have come from Warbases. The deliver stuff very quickly, and their range of products is very good indeed. I particularly like the fact that you can order some many different sizes and types of base.

I hope to use my new bases as I develop my OPERATIONAL ART rules ... but my current priority is writing THE PORTABLE NAPOLEONIC WARGAME book.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Ray Rousell,

They are one of the best companies that I order from. As far as fast deliveries are concerned, they amongst the fastest, along with Irregular Miniature and Warrior Miniatures.

      All the best,

Very nice! I wish I could justify buying a 3D printer, but at the moment, I cannot.

  5. I've used warbases before, but interesting to have another browse. I hadn't spotted these [ https://warbases.co.uk/?product=playing-card-tokens ] before which might be of interest to you. I see they come in a choice of sizes.

    1. Nigel Drury,

Thanks for the link. I must admit that in all my visits to the Warbases website, I'd never seen the playing card tokens.

      All the best,

  6. 'Imitation ios the sincerest for of flattery', I'm told. But the dice holders I use do have a way of keeping things tidy and reminding one to move the markers along with the unit to which it belongs. Other markers (e.g. dice without holders) are apt to be forgotten, as well as knocked over.

One of the reasons for my using them on groups rather than individual elements is that I have only a limited number of them.

    1. Archduke Piccolo,

I've seen dice holders in use that are attached to figure bases, but not separate ones like you have. They seemed to be a good way of marking the current SP of units that did not involve the use of a written roster (I always forget to keep them up to date during a game), magnetic number tiles (which I constantly seem to lose during a game), or loose dice.

A good idea is always worth copying ... and it is only polite to acknowledge where the idea came from!

      All the best,

      Bob

Well done! I'm hoping that it will be the answer to my record-keeping situation as well.
