The Toulon Naval Museum

During our cruise to the Western Mediterranean last October, Sue and I were able to visit the Toulon Naval Museum.

It is situated close to the gates of the naval base, and is one of several French naval museums. The museum is compact but full of exhibits that tell the story of the French navy and the growth of the Toulon Naval Base.

The ground floor has a number of small galleries that contain statues of some of the men who helped to create the French Navy, ...

... maps of Toulon harbour and its defences, ...

... and examples of the intricate wooden carvings that once adorned French warships.

In the centre of the museum is a large two-story hall ...

... that contains two very large models of sail-powered warships ...

... of the sort often used to instruct young sailors in the intricacies of a ship's masts and rigging.

On the upper floor are galleries containing numerous model ships and exhibits that show the development of warships.

    1. Jim Duncan,

I’ve not seen that one, but they used to have something similar at Chatham.

      All the best,

      Bob
