Playing around with bases

Further to my recent blog entry about organising my collection of World War II figures and vehicles into armies, I've bought some suitable laser cut 3mm-thick MDF bases from Warbases, and have playing around with where to place the 7mm D6 die holder that I will be using to record each bases Strength Points.

There seem to be two options. I can either place the dice holder in either the right-hand or left-hand rear corner of the base ...

... or in the centre of the back edge of the base.

Both seem to work, and it strikes me that I could use whichever is most appropriate for the figures and vehicles I am basing.

  1. Where appropriate, could even use them as unit id - for example, 1st Co left side, 2nd Co centre, 3rd Co Right side.

    1. Rob Young,

Thanks! What an excellent suggestion! I'd never thought of doing that!

      All the best,

As Rob says it's worth considering whether there's further information about the unit which can be displayed by the marker's placement. However two other things occur...
1 In the centre, the frame might well get in the way of a vehicle
2 Placed on the left, assuming righthandedness, puts your bending fingers over the base itself, with its figures. Putting the frame on the right puts your fingers out into space/open ground. Given that the dice used are tiny and, as we get older our fingers (like noses and ears) appear to grow disproportionately large, such ergonomics might be important.

Barring any useful ancillary game function I would err towards the right (I think they look neater in the corner anyway)
    Cheers

    1. Rumblestrip (Andrew),

      More excellent suggestions!

Although I am naturally left-handed, I do many things - like picking up dice - with either hand, so placing a he die holder in the right-hand, rear corner presents me with few problems and leaves room to the left for any unit labels I might wish to add.

      All the best,

  3. For what it's worth, I'm with Andrew and have found that markers which need to be manipulated during play tend to work best on the right-rear corner (on rectangular or square bases).

    1. Ed M,

I'm certainly coming around to the idea that the die holder should be in the right-hand, rear corner of the base.

  4. Interesting. Are the dice holders made by War Bases? Who have just delivered my "Portable" wargame board - with which I am most impressed.

    1. David Bradley,

They certainly are from Warbases, a company that I have found to be very efficient, great to deal with, and fast to respond to orders and requests.

I have also taken deliver of a second 50mm Portable Wargame board, which I intend to paint green ... once I've ordered some of their round-cornered 50mm square bases to use as hills!

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Maybe make a mix of a few options, try them out, see how it evolves (I like the idea of packing more information into the display), then go to scale. Looks nice in any event.

    1. Adelaide Gamer,

I think I'm going to opt for placing the die holder in the right-hand, rear corner of the base unless it makes more sense to place it elsewhere on a particular base. I can then use the left-hand, rear corner as the location for the unit identification label.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. This looks a good way forward wherever you decide to put the dice frame. Warbases offer an excellent service and are most reliable indeed. I look forward to seeing how the hill looks.

    1. Tradgardmastare,

I originally planned to have separate die holders for each unit base, but after I'd made some, I decided that I preferred the die holder to be part of the unit base.

Warbases are an excellent company to deal with, and get my 100% recommendation rating!

      All the best,

      Bob
