Some new acquisitions

Having resolved not to buy very much on our last cruise, I ended up with a number of souvenirs, most of which will be added to my wargaming collection.

One thing that I did buy was a Latvian flag, which has been added to my extensive collection of national and regional flags.

Whilst in Tallinn, Estonia, I bought some models that represent examples of local buildings ...

... and in Russia I managed to find and buy a couple of small model military vehicles, including on of a T-90 tank.

Considering that I had not planned to buy anything, I think that I did rather well!

    1. Ross Mac,

Oscar Wilde once said, 'I can resist anything except temptation' ... and these models were very tempting.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Ross Mac,

I will certainly try to add some more of the towers and fortifications if the opportunity arises in future.

      All the best,

    1. Kaptain Kobold,

In retrospect, I wish that I'd bought at least another of the wall sections as I can see lots if potential uses for a hem.

      All the best,

  4. Hi Bob,
I do like the little Estonian model buildings- I'm assuming that you were thinking of your 'Grid Terrain' when purchasing and how well they would fit into the scheme of things. On Estonia- in my very early career as a High School teacher my Art Mistress was an Estonian lady...'Vika' - I always will remember her with great memories of the four years stint at Greystanes. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

The great thing about the model buildings I bought in Tallinn is that they can be used from the Middle Ages to the present day, and are typical of the buildings found around the Baltic.

I used to work with a British-born Latvian whose first name was Janis. He was once expected to share a room at a conference with a female attendee because the organisers had assumed that he was female! He was not amused!

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Tradgardmastare,

I need to remove or disguise the word 'Tallinn' which seems to have been moulded onto each of the models. Once that it done, I hope to use them on my tabletop.

      All the best,

    1. TamsinP,

Cheers! I particularly like the large city gate model and the section of wall with the small towers.

  7. Great looking buildings Bob. What scale would you say they are?

The round tower looks like the Moomins house ;-) Which I suppose is Baltic too.

    1. Nundanket,

The scale is a bit variable, but I'd estimate them to average out to to be about 1:200th-scale.

The round tower is very Moomin-like (I had not realised that until you pointed it out), and I suppose that considering the proximity of Estonia and Sweden, it is not too surprising that they are.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Oooooh! 😮 I can hear the quiet rumblings coming from Finland at that Bob. Whilst Tove Jansson was a Swedish speaker, she was Finnish.

Having been to the real Moominland (not the imposter they're building in Japan) I can assure you it's very much on the eastern side of the Gulf of Bothnia. :-)

(Obviously, you're right in that the Finnic speaking countries were both part of the Swedish empire....)

    3. Nundanket,

I never knew that. As Estonian is related to Finnish (along with Magyar), the cross-cultural transfer must have been significant ... including architectural styles.

It was not until I went on this cruise that I realised how important the Hanseatic League was in the history and development of the Baltic region. I understand that it originated in Gotland, and spread across Northern Europe, and even had a contor or trading base in London.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. I am very good at resisting temptation, though not especially fond of it. But I reckon those buildings and that Russian kit would have insinuated past my defences with ease...
