Lost comments

I opened my emails this morning, and discovered that someone had blitzed my blog with a large number of unwanted 'comments' about loans. Furthermore, when I went into the 'Comments' section of Blogger to remove them, I discovered that all comments (and my replies) from 27th October onwards have been replaced by this cretin's unwanted contributions.

I am going to attempt to restore the 'lost' comments, some of which were about the late Stuart Asquith, but it looks as if all of them have been deleted. I don't know how this could have happened, but all I can assume is that somehow this 'comment' dump has overwritten the original files.

This sort of thing makes me so angry, and if I could get hold of the person responsible, I would be very tempted to do something very unpleasant to them.

  1. I did have the odd spam comment, but nothing to this level, so I ended up having them to be approved by myself before they could appear on my Blog. Fingers crossed they've never reappeared. Maybe you might need to do this, like many other Bloggers?

    1. Steve J.,

I have had comment moderation in place in the past to stop the odd spammer, but the 'attacks' were so infrequent that I removed it.

In future I may well have to revert to moderating every comment that is made to stop this sort of catastrophic impact occurring again.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hi Bob,

    That is bad news indeed!

I went through a phase of getting comments about 'lovely Eastern European ladies that wanted to meet me' so I opted to go down the 'no comments from anonymous users' route so I see everything before it gets published.

Will you be able to get the original comments back?

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

At least I have most of the comments in their original email format, and hope to save them in some way.

As to Eastern European women who are 'seeking a meaningful relationship', I no longer get such messages. I'm obviously too old and/or too ugly even for them!

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi Bob,
Recently I've had some idiotic guru post huge passages on my several blog postings - offering that I can become rich and famous...the same message over and over..it all was some sort of a scam- and I Deleted Forever these messages...it has been a week now and the culprit hasn't returned. To-night I had a message from what appears to be a female - though the entire message was in a foreign language ...anyway I deleted it all forever. Regards. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I've also had messages from some guru offering me wealth beyond my dreams ... and I have so far managed to consign his missives to the spam folder and barred him from making further comments.

As to foreign language messages ... well I've had a few from the Far East that were totally unreadable, but they have also been added to the spam file.

I wonder why such people bother ... but they must occasionally 'catch' people who they can fleece.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Very strange to have comments disappear in wholesale. Not sure how that is even possible unless the spammer has access to your blogger account. Very disheartening, no doubt.

    1. Jonathan Freitag,

Exactly fourteen days-worth of comments ... which is the number of days that comments could be made without moderation. I’ve now put moderation in place for all messages and changed my password.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Sounds like your Blogger account has been compromised. Change your password immediately!

    1. Mike,

The first thing that I did was to change my password, just in case.
