The Portable Colonial Wargame book ... is currently being printed!

My tried and very trusty proof reader did an astonishingly fast job, and sent the list of errors and corrections to me over the weekend. I made the necessary changes, and this afternoon I have uploaded the files to Lulu.com and requested printed proof copies. These should be arriving sometime in the next fortnight, and once I have checked them over, the book will be published.

It is going to appear in four different editions:
  • As a PDF (only available from Lulu.com) costing £2.49
  • As a A5-sized black and white paperback (available from Lulu.com, Amazon, and other online book retailers) costing £9.49
  • As a US Trade-sized black and white dust jacket hardback (available from Lulu.com, Amazon, and other online book retailers) costing £19.49
  • As a US Trade-sized full colour casewrap hardback (only available from Lulu.com) costing £24.99
I hope that this will cover all the main options potential purchasers will want, although I have not yet been able to produce an eBook edition due to ongoing software difficulties.

The cover will look like this:

As soon as the book is published, I'll make sure that my regular blog readers know!

    1. Tradgardmastare,

I’m pleased that the book has finally reached this stage, and can barely wait for it to actually be published.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob, I see the Great Wall of Morobad graces the cover - looks good.
And the sands of the desert are spotted red ... (sorry, Newbolt!), too!
    Another best seller?
    Best wishes, Arthur

    1. Arthur1815,

I decided to use that photograph as a sort of memorial to Joseph Morschauser.

I like the ‘spotted’ reference. I’d not made the connection until you pointed it out.

Will it be a best seller? Not sure, but I hope it sells as well as the Napoleonic book, and helps to spread the word regarding the benefits of colonial wargaming.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Chance would be a fine thing! I’m currently taking a break from cleaning the conservatory windows ... which is no small task.

      All the best,

Cheers! I hope that the printed proof copies will be delivered within a fortnight so that I approve the book for release.

  5. Don't be too gentle on Bob - perhaps we should bombard him with ideas for the next book!! Really looking forward to the book being available in 2 weeks or so. In the meantime I hope to start on some 20mm Indian Mutiny figures - any clues on basing for these rules?

    1. Simon,

I already have plans for further books, including a compendium of variant written by other wargamers.

I’ve included both single and multiple figures base options in the forthcoming books. I’ve done this so that wargamers can use existing figures. My personal preference for 20mm figures would be to use individual figure bases, probably based on steel washers or pennies.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Waiting with baited breath for the new book, I'll grab a PDF ASAP to support your work and willingness to offer multiple formats.

I have plans to put together my own portable wargame kit. It's a little cheeky but fully functional. How can I share it with you when it's finished? I don't use facebook or have a blog.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

Hopefully you shouldn’t have to wait too long.

I like to make my stuff available in formats to suit all potential players requirements. That way I can spread the word about the PW rules without expecting players to lay out lots of money for something they are not sure they will enjoy using.

If you want to share stuff with other PW users, you could always join the Portable Wargame group on io or you could send it to one of my email addresses. The best one to use is probably wargamer @ ntlworld.com ... but don’t forget to leaving out the spaces.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. That is most excellent news and I look forward to getting a copy of it. Now I just have to decide if I want the softcover or the hardback version. Decisions, decisions...

    1. PatrickW,

I am tempted to say both ... but that is me just being greedy! Whichever one you buy, I hope that you enjoy reading it and using the rules.

      All the best,

  9. The downside of the shut down: as all but essential services in this country are being shut down for several weeks it looks as though I won't be placing an order until that time is past (playing it safe). I know which copy I want; the US trade-sized full colour chappy. But I guess I can wait another month or so...

    1. Archduke Piccolo,

Despite the lockdown - which is by no means total - the UKs postal service is still functioning, and as far as I know, Lulu.com is still processing orders, so I’m expecting that the printed proof copies will be with me within a fortnight. I’ll let you know when the book is released for publication.

I’m sure that the wait will be worth it ... I hope!

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

  10. Thanks a heap, Bob. Just when I thought it was safe to go back to my bookshelf, you come out with another Portable Wargame book I'll absolutely buy! Kidding aside, I really do admire what you've accomplished.

    Best regards,

    Chris Johnson

    1. Chris Johnson,

I'm like JAWS. Just when you think that it is safe again ...

I hope that you enjoy reading the book and using the rules when it is published. I certainly enjoyed writing it, although there were times when I wondered if I would ever finish it.

      Stay safe and stay well,

      Bob

    1. Steve J.,

I looked back at the time it took Lulu.com to print proof copies my previous books, and it usually took five working days plus a day for delivery. If they manage to follow this timetable for THE PORTABLE COLONIAL WARGAME, I should be able to release it for publication sometime next week.

      All the best,

      Bob
