Napoleonic Portable Wargame Skirmish rules

I understand that the latest issue of MINIATURE WARGAMES (Issue 447) contains a set of Napoleonic Portable Wargame Skirmish rules written by Arthur Harman.

Arthur had already sent me a draft of the article that he was submitting for publication, and I must admit that he has developed a very interesting variant of the rules that I can thoroughly recommend. I might even venture as far as the nearest branhc of WHSmith to buy a copy when the shops reopen next week!

  1. Hi Bob,
From the cover this looks like an interesting issue of Miniature Wargames. I balk at paying $15 for a magazine which may have two or three pages which genuinely interest me...I tend to put my meager dollars into Paints and Brushes...perhaps it is my Scotish Heritage that causes me not to spend money on magazines at the News Agency. Have a good weekend there. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I’ve moved over to using Readly for my magazine subscriptions. It gives me electronic access to thousands of different magazines, and I can share it with my wife for no extra cost. I’ve only had it for a month, and I’ve read a load of publications, including several model railway magazines and the good old COMMANDO war comics! The cost was less than the cost of a single magazine ... so it seems like it is a bargain.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Hi Bob,
Your Electronic Magazines sounds a really good deal- certainly cutting your costs and giving you access to wide reading. For me such an arrangement wouldn't suit as I'm not patient enough to read a real lot- Blogs are about my limit for reading as I tend to enjoy seeing what other enthusiasts are doing with their hobby and I especially look for photos of their work. Regards. KEV.

Readly is worth looking at ... and I think that they actually offer a free month's trial.

That said, good blogs are a great substitute!

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob,
Readly sounds a good idea - until I think how long I'd spend reading the model railway magazines and exposing myself to temptation!

I must admit that some of the model railway magazines do set one’s mind thinking about how one could fit a layout (and it’s construction) into one’s home!

      All the best,

  3. But does your magic magazine thingy allow me to read this one interesting looking article?

    1. Steve8,

I’m afraid not, but Arthur Harman might be prevailed upon to supply a copy of the text.

      All the best,

    2. No need. I just checked on your magic magazine app.

    3. Steve8,

Since we subscribed to Readly, my wife and I have read loads of different magazines.

      All the best,

  4. I have sent off for a hard copy this morning. I wonder if it would be ok to ask if I out to be looking out individual Napoleonic figures or what in preparation for the magazine’s arrival? How big are the sides?

    1. Tradgardmastare,

You’ll need a copy of PNW as Arthur’s rules are an add-on to the original rules.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. tradgarmastare, you may - judging by your question - have the wrong idea about the article. It is not a complete set of rules for a Portable Napoleonic skirmish game, but an addition to existing PNW rules, at whichever level - Brigade, Division or Army - you are playing, to add a little detail and atmosphere by portraying skirmishers in front of units. All you need - assuming you already have armies for PNW - is a few extra single figures of appropriate infantry to put in front of formed units when they send out skirmishers.I hope that helps.

    1. Most interesting, I fear I had got the wrong end of the stick.

    2. Arthur1815,

I should have made the fact that your rules are an add-on to the original rules rather than a set of stand-alone rules. Thanks very much for clearing this up.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Bob,
I have just down loaded a copy of the Magazine from 'Pocketmags'. Single issue for £4.99. The rule concept is very good and will make a good addition to your rule sets. Well done to Arthur! I look forward to having a go with them.
    Regards Paul.
PS - How is the English Civil War Version coming on??

    1. PDL,

I looked at ‘Pocketmags’ as an alternative to Readly, but as my wife also likes to read magazines, the latter was a better option.

The rules are an excellent adjunct to PNW, and I can see people adapting the ideas to other periods.

The 17th century/ECW book is on hold until Lulu.com get themselves sorted out. I have raised several queries with them and have not yet received a single answer. I’ve had no sales figures for non-Lulu sales for two months, all my sales figures before the migration to the new website are missing, and several books are waiting to be cleared for publication ... when they have been on sale for quite some time. They are still some way from returning to normal.

      All the best,

      Bob
