I finished painted the bases of the two tanks that had been languishing hlaf-finished on my worktable sine last year.
They are by no means masterpieces, but they will suit my purposes, and will fit in with the other vehicles I have painted for my Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War project.
I have already undercoated the next batch of vehicles and hope to get them finished over the next few days.
I have a (probably strange) attitude to WW2. Started in the days before oil prices shot up, so cheap Airfix figures and tanks - got used to being able to buy 3 tanks a week on pocket money. So they were always looked on as a cheap and 'quick' option - as long as they did the job. That attitude stuck. 'Suit my purposes' does the job.

DeleteThere was a time when I tried to make each model a mini-masterpiece ... but they took me an age to get finished and they didn’t look much better than vehicles with ‘it’ll do’ paint jobs. For this project I decided to go with a minimal but neat paint job. I’m more than happy with the results.

ReplyDeleteNice work there on the two Tanks. Are the models 15mm? A long time ago I put together many 1/72nd Tanks...US, British and German- always a lot of fun and very enjoyable following the instructions. My 1/72nd Figures for WW2 were plastic by ESCI. Best Wishes. KEV.

DeleteThe models are both out of production ROCO Minitanks, which are HO/1/87th-scale. They have had a few bits added to them (e,g. spare track, a new turret cupola, hull machine gun, and jerrycan on the Pzkpfw IV) from the spares box.
I have several boxes of incomplete ROCO vehicles that over the years I have bought on eBay or at wargame shows, and I probably have far more than I will ever need! I also have a box or two of damaged, incomplete, and unmade 1/76th and 1/72nd military kits which I can plunder for odds and ends.
Most of my figures are metal from a variety of different manufacturers as is most of my artillery.

DeleteIt would seem that your 1/87th (HO) Vehicles fit in well and nicely with your soldiers...Interestingly some of the early AIRFIX WW2 Figure sets were indeed 1/87th scale. I prefer 1/72nd. All the Best- and glad your feeling well and recovering. Cheers. KEV.

DeleteI started out wargaming with ROCO Minitanks and the original ‘small’ Airfix German and British infantry sets, and prefer that size of figure for WW2 wargaming. That said, in the past I’ve mixed 1/87th, 1/76th, and 1/72nd vehicles in my wargame armies without too many qualms.

They look fine - I'm right with you on simple paint jobs. As a kid I rather coveted the Roco minitanks shown in Charles Grant's 'Battle!', but never acquired any - there was always Airfix, of course.

I bought my first ROCO Minitanks back in the early 1960s in Woolworths in Southend-on-Sea. Like you, I was ‘sold’ on Minitanks after seeing them in Charles Grant’s book.
I subsequently bought more as and when I saw them. In the 1970s I found a model ship near Upton Park that carried a large stock of Minitanks, and bought quite a large number every time I went there.
I also invested very heavily in Airfix models ... most of which I passed on to younger wargamers when I ran clubs in the schools where I worked.
