A new month … and no change of project

I had a plan to help maintain my enthusiasm for my varied ongoing projects by changing from one to another every month. For a variety of reasons, I have decided to keep working on my FUNNY LITTLE WARS/PORTABLE WARGAME Army Black rather than to leave it unfinished when I am in the middle of painting the cavalry.

As I find that my painting tends to be done in fits and starts, I hope to fit in work on developing a revised version of my BALKAN LEAGUE Matrix Game campaign/Wargame Rules for publication. I hope to expand the existing text to include a set of suitable army-level PORTABLE WARGAME rules so that players can actually fight any battles generated by the Matrix Game campaign.

  1. Hi BOB,
That is good news that you are pressing ahead with your FLW Project. I've been making a Dwarf Cottage to-day from cardboard and balsa wood as I wait for the delivery of several Dwarf miniatures from the UK- the waiting is hard and I think things for Airfreight will be terribly delayed due to the virus. Enjoy continuing the painting of the 15mm Cavalry. Best Wishes. KEV.

I managed to do an hour’s painting this morning, and hope to spent some more time painting this afternoon.

I hope that your dwarves arrive soon so that you will have some figures to populate your cottage and other buildings.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

    2. BOB,
Luckily I know that the Dwarf miniatures are 20 to 22mm tall as I do not have a single Dwarf figures for use as a 'Scale'...the Cottages should be OK size wise. Cheers. KEV.

Knowing how experienced a modeller you are, I’m sure that your dwarven buildings will look great next to your as-yet-to-arrive figures.

      All the best,

  2. "Maintenance of the Aim" is very Prussian so it's appropriate.....;-)
I always find painting is best done when enthusiasm strikes; I have often forced myself to paint when the "tedium demon" strikes to keep a project going which would otherwise stall. It's hard work though....
I managed to do some painting over the weekend experimenting with GW "Contrast Paints" . They are like a heavy pigmented wash or more accurately stain. So far I've tried on a white primer and black with a heavy white undercoat. The former worked better as I ended up "tidying up" the latter which meant I spent much more time on them.
I will have to try a wash after the Contrast Paints to see what that's like.

You are right about needing to be in the mood to paint if you are going to both enjoy it and get it done. In the past I have spent hours at a time trying to get a project finished … and not enjoyed the process. It is far better to paint when you want to and not when you have to.

I have yet to try GW’s Contrast Paints as getting access to their paints is no longer as easy as it used to be. GW shut their shop in Bluewater some years ago … and now the nearest one i can easily get to is over twenty miles away!

Good luck with trying a wash over the Contrast Paints.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. I always buy my paints off Amazon. I use the Contrast paints a lot now, especially with the fancy detailed models we have nowadays. My eyes and hands can’t do the three tone technique I used long ago. I strongly recommend watching a few YouTube videos before committing.

    3. Steve8,

Although I have bought paint from Humbrol/Airfix online, I’ve not bought them from Amazon. I’ll have to see what they have on offer.

My painting technique is more gorilla with a six-inch brush than anything fancy, although I am trying to improve … after sixty plus years!

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Bob,
I bought mine from a certain online auction site, searching for the best price.
They are not cheap. For C20th uniforms a couple of the colours work very well.
    A good introduction is here:

      Ah! That makes sense!

I’ll have a look at the links you have sent me. I’m interested in looking at any painting techniques that can produce great results for the least effort.

      All the best,

      Bob
