It seems that I cannot get away from 54mm toy soldiers! Yesterday I wrote about the FUNNY LITTLE WARS battle that I took part in on Saturday, and today I am blogging about the Colonial battle Russell King has fought using figures from his collection of Britains Toy Soldiers!
Russell's battle saw a British force trying to seize control of a sacred temple from a combined Indo-Burmese force ... that was supported by Chinthe! (This is a stylised lion, statues of which can often be found in pairs protecting the entrance to a Buddhist temple.)
The Indo-Burmese force contained a number of interesting and very colourful units in its ranks ...
...and the British were led by an austere looking mounted officer.
The fighting saw both sides clash on the site of the temple, and from Russell's description of the action, it was a close-run thing.
The British prevailed in the end ... but only just!
This was a very colourful battle, conducted on a small tabletop, and yet again is shows the ingenuity of users of the PORTABLE WARGAME.

A couple observations:
ReplyDeleteFirst, this looks almost like a traditional chess setup and game. It must be in part due to the larger figures.
Second, the larger figures make for a much more hectic and cluttered game. They really bring the battle to life and the effect just isn't the same with smaller minis. It's almost like how a traditional Go board has spaces just a wee bit too small for the stones so they physically jostle and fight for literal space on the board while also getting that metaphorical struggle for control of the space.

In many ways the game looks very similar to Joseph Morschauser’s gridded battles fought with Britains figures, but on a smaller scale.

Just the sort of game I imagined during the development stage. Especially good for those with space or physical limitations or for a game with non-wargamers or... many other times!

The fact that anyone with a small collection of Britain’s (or similar) figures and a 3’ x 3’ tabletop can put on a PW game makes it an attractive prospect for anyone wanting to experiment with wargaming … or for old stagers like us!
