Stalled by COVID-19

We just had a phone call from the company that is revamping our kitchen … and it wasn’t good news.

Apparently, the fitter who was booked to do the work on our kitchen next Monday was ‘pinged’ this morning by the NHS COVID app and has now got to self isolate until the end of next week. As a result, the start of our kitchen revamp will be postponed until Thursday. So that they can finish the revamp in two days, the company is sending in a team of two fitters to complete the work.

This has rather thrown our plans for next week into confusion, but I am sure that we will be able to be flexible and change them. On the upside, it does mean that I should be able to finish painting the cavalry (and mounted generals) for my FUNNY LITTLE WARS/PORTABLE ARMY Army Black. If I am lucky, I might even manage to get them based by Thursday.

  2. Ah that’s a shame. Hope it’s not further delayed.

    I suspect the Pingdemic will be the most serious brake on economic recovery.

      As long as it gets done, we are not worried by a few day’s delay.

      Interestingly, I thought that the app had been amended so that it ‘pinged’ fewer people because of the affect of the pingdemic on the economy’s recovery.

      You were right; according to the powers that be, it was stopping too many people from returning to work, and it was certainly affecting the transport industries. One wonders what the situation will be once large numbers of unvaccinated young people return to education.

  4. As said above, home improvement in the era of pandemic !!! However, personally speaking, I would not want a fitter coming to my house who had been exposed to Covid. Double jabbed or not, I still have no desire to catch it. I get that the App is a nuisance in many ways but I am not sure its a good idea to turn it off. Better safe than sorry. Regards.

      Neither of the fitters have been ‘pinged’, and we intend to keep well out of their way whilst they are working, and the windows will be open.

      I need to clarify my statement about switching the app off. I have it on whilst away from home, but off when at home. I have lateral flow tests every couple of days, and to date I have not had a positive result.

      I did get ‘pinged’ by the app last week … but it told me to isolate for two days. I checked, and it appears that I had been in a restaurant eight days beforehand on a day when someone who tested positive had visited the same restaurant. The app had registered that I had been there for lunch … but did not check me out until 23.59! The fact that it had taken eight days to notify me shows how ineffective the app can be at helping to stem the spread of the virus.

      I did isolate for the two days, and took lateral flow tests each day … and the were all negative.

    As you realize we are in total Lock Down here - no visitors which means no Trades People...so, with how things are operating there in London it may have it's glitches though things are proceeding near to normal. I'm looking forward to eventually seeing some photos of your FLW progress - sounds a very interesting Project. Best Wishes. KEV.

      The situation in London is a sort of halfway house between lockdown and normal. There are limitations, and one is expected to wear a mask on public transport, and visiting tradespeople usually wear them whilst working. Most 30+ people are wearing masks in shops, etc., but a lot of younger people aren’t … and yet they are the least protected adults and the group that makes up the largest age group being hospitalised.

      The painting of the FLW/PW cavalry is progressing well, and they are close to being finished. When they are, I will post some photographs on my blog.

  6. Back at the start of the pandemic we had a seemingly fatal problem with our Sky setup.

    Sky offered to replace any faulty equipment at no charge as we are long standing customers. This would include the dish on the roof, the Sky boxes, and the connecting wiring.

    We agreed despite the fact that the Sky setup started working again.

    Sky sent a one man crew who gave us a detailed description of the actual work but couldn't do it himself as it was a 2 man job.

    Sky sent another one man crew who said the first engineer talked a load of rubbish and gave a different detailed description of the work required but he did agree that it was a 2 man job and went away.

    A 2 man crew did turn up but without a 'special high' ladder to reach the roof top dish and went away again.

    The original Sky setup was still working.

    Their office phoned up to apologise, had booked a 2 man crew with a 'special high' ladder but a change in their pandemic restrictions that stopped 2 man crews from doing certain jobs.

    Sky have stopped making arrangements for us and the Sky setup is still working.

    I wonder what they would do if We had to phone them again?

      Reading this tale reminds me of a Flanders and Swann song ‘The Gasman Cometh’, where various workmen turn up, don’t complete the job they are supposed to do, and leave things in such a state that a different workman has to come in and sort matter out … or not, as the case might be!

      Al least your Sky connection is still working!
