A Portable Wargame project for 2022

Before Christmas I had a couple of online exchanges with players who have developed their own variants of my PORTABLE WARGAME rules. Theses emails were about the possibility of making their ideas and variants available to others ... and I whilst I was taking my recent break, I came to the conclusion that I ought to give serious consideration to publishing a PORTABLE WARGAME COMPENDIUM at some point during 2022. This would initially be in paperback and Kindle format, and I would hope to make it available for less than £10.00.

I would not be in a position to pay from anything that is included in the compendium, but I would ensure that any contributions were properly attributed and that contributors received a free copy of the book.

At present this is just an idea … but I would welcome any positive or negative feedback from regular blog readers and users of my rules.

  1. Hi Bob
    Happy new year.
A compendium sounds like a good idea. I would definitely be interested.

    Kind regards

  3. I think gathering together a number of the small adaptions in one place would be useful

  4. Bob,
It's an interesting idea and I hope to be able to contribute something. I do hope, however, that you will not abandon producing future period-specific PW books, such as ACW and 18th century wars.
    Best wishes,
    Arthur

Don’t worry, I still have plans for period-specific books as well as the compendium.

I am hoping that you will be one of the contributors; it wouldn’t be a good compendium without your input.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Bob -
Judging by the list of potential contributors so far, your projected compendium will be a handy little resource book for PW war gamers. I would certainly be interested in buying a copy!
    Cheers,

  7. Happy New year all be it a bit late. I think the compendium would be a great idea. It would be like a one stop for all things portable.
Rules, campaigns, solo and ideas all 8n one.
Put me down for a copy.

    1. Stephen Smith,

And a Happy New Year to you as well!

I will be relying on contributors to do the bulk of the writing, whilst I will do the editing and layout. I'm not quite sure what it will contain, but it will no doubt be an interesting project to work on.

      All the best,

      Bob

  9. Bob, a compendium is a great idea; I might suggest naming is such that new editions could flow naturally. Maybe The Portable Wargame Compendium 2022 or some such. This would allow for nice clean naming scheme for any future editions. We all know the rules allow for infinite possibilities...

    1. Mike Taber,

Cheers! I actually began thinking about producing a PW Annual, but a compendium seemed to be a better idea ... and giving it a year date as you suggest does leave it open for further compendiums to follow, should the need arise. Thanks for the suggestion.

      All the best,

      Bob

  10. I'd avoid giving it a date, which might limit sales in the future people might be put off buying the 2022 edition in 2025. What about "The Portable Wargame Compendium" for the fist issue, them Volume II and so on for later ones.

    1. John Armatys,

That is an excellent suggestion ... and would certainly allow for future PW Compendiums to be published.

  11. Bob,
I tend to agree with John about omitting a date. You could just call them PW Compendium, then PW Compendium II, III &c. whenever subsequent volumes were published.
    Best wishes, Arthur

I think that the reasoning you and John have both used has helped me to make up my mind.

  12. Bob. A PWG Compendium sounds like a great idea to me. Have you considered including Scenarios as well as Rule variations?

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

I’d like to include some scenarios if anyone cares to write them.

      All the best,
