The Burgundian ironclad battleships

Yesterday, despite feeling a bit under the weather, I managed to finish painting my two model Burgundian ironclad battleships.

I kept the colour scheme simple; a black hull and ochre upperworks. This was the colour scheme used by the French Navy during La Belle Époque, and as the design of the models is based on the French Amiral Baudin-class ironclads and Burgundy is a simulacrum of France, this made sense.

I have now begun to design two ironclads for the Schwarzenberg Navy … and I’m looking at a couple of early German designs for my inspiration.

  1. BOB,
Nice work - you have done a splendid job of the Ironclads. They have certainly a charm about them. Regards. KEV.

    1. Tradgardmastare,

Cheers! The next pair will look quite different, and their design will be based on two German-built and designed classes of ironclad from the 1880s/1890#.

      All the best,

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I wanted them to look a bit like the toy boats of the period, and the cartoon-style seemed to work.

      All the best,

  4. Hello there Bob,

They look really good and I am looking forward to seeing the German inspired opposition - and then perhaps both in action! They have really captured the look of the original, suitably Corderyised!

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

I’m glad that you like them! Their potential opponents will have a somewhat different look to them, and will be based on a couple of classes of battleship built in Germany in the 1880s and 1890#. I’ve begun work on them, and they should be finished in about a week’s time.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Nice additions to your fleet! Out of curiosity, how many models have you made to date?

    1. Mark Cordone,

Many thanks for your kind words!

These are the first two ship models for this project, but I have built many more over the years using this style of model. Some years ago I built two small fleets, and they featured in a number of posts. 6. Dear Bob, Just wanted to say thank you these warships look wonderful! They really capture the style & charm of old toy warships as well as evoking the long bygone era of late 19th century floating Grand Hotel Battleships. I must say your previous Pre-Dreadnought Battleships have really inspired me to have a go at making my own fleets for Russo Japanese War 1904 battles of Port Arthur and Yellow Sea. Thank you again. 1. Glory to Ruritania (Quinn),

Many thanks for your kind comments about my model ships. Many of the ironclads and early pre-dreadnoughts were built to some very odd-looking designs … and they are a great source of inspiration for modellers like me!

Good luck with your Russo-Japanese project.

      All the best,

      Bob
