A trip to the seaside

When we woke up yesterday morning, it looked as if we were going to have good weather … so Sue and I decided to go to the seaside!

It took us less than one and a half hours to drive to Herne Bay, Kent, ...

... and we parked in the town’s main car park at about 12.45pm. After a short visit to a local homeware shop – Busy B’s – to buy some floor mats, Sue and I walked along the High Street until we reached the local branch of the NATWEST bank. We crossed the road, and then went down William Street towards the seafront road – Central Parade – where went went into MACKARI'S restaurant/café/ice cream parlour to have a lunch of fish and chips.

After a very nice meal, we returned inland, and walked along the town’s main shopping street, Mortimer Street. The local shops gave us the opportunity to do some retail therapy. Sue bought a new pair of shoes, and I purchased a large bottle of clear PVA glue from the local branch of THE WORKS.

We then returned to the High Street, where Sue bought some bits and pieces from a small haberdashery shop (HEIDI'S CRAFTS & FABRICS) and we ended our visit at the local branch of ALDIs – which was located next to the car park – where we bought some bedding plants, fruit, and coleslaw.

Our drive back to Southeast London was uneventful, and we got home just before 4.30pm. We had had a great day out and being in the sunshine by the sea really helped to raise my morale after the recent visit from my Black Dog.

  1. BOB,
Your visit to the Seaside sounds just the ticket to lifting your spirits and overall a refreshing day out for you. Glad your over the bought of the Black Dog- nothing worse. I've recently had a little bit of feeling down and aimless- only because I was on the look for a new project- now I've found it I'm feeling better and more relaxed and not on edge- most calming to have a Project that your happy about. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

We are lucky in that we can get to the Kentish seaside so quickly. We had considered going to Deal, Walmer, or Sandwich, but when we checked, there were major holdups on the roads in that part of Kent … so we went to Herne Bay instead.

The good weather, the sun, and the excellent food made it a day to remember, especially since it has been so long since we were able to go to the Kent coast. It would have been almost impossible not to feel better as a result.

I know what you mean about having a project. I’m currently doing some work on another army for my PW Belle Époque project, and it has helped me to cope with everything life is throwing at me at present,

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

  5. Lovely place, Herne Bay. Glad you got out and about, Bob. Good for the soul.
[Another time the Hampton Inn at the western edge of Herne Bay is good for food (worth a pre-book)].

    1. Martin S.,

Sue’s dad used to live in Herne Bay, so we got to know the area quite well, and ejpnjoy going back there whenever we can.

Thanks for the tip about the Hampton Inn. I’ve not heard of it before, but we may well give it a try the next time we go there.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. So the big questions are:

Did you wear a kiss-me-quick hat or a knotted handkerchief?
How far up did you roll your trousers?
Did you bring a stick of stripey rock back?
    Were there any dokey rides?

Cheers Simon (who was brought up near Blackpool!)

    1. Simon,

In answer to your questions …
No hats were worn … or - as far as I could see - on sale anywhere. As to knotted hankies … I left mine in my pocket because I wasn’t sure how clean it was.
My trouser legs stay unrolled … nowadays I only tend to roll them up when I’m in a Lodge meeting!
I did see a shop selling sticks of rock, but nowadays my teeth are just not up to eating seaside rock.
The beach at Herne Bay is shingle, and unsuitable for donkeys … but we did see one by the entrance to our local city farm as we drove home.

      All the best,

Bob (whose first experience of a beach was on the River Thames near the Tower of London. https://www.mylondon.news/news/nostalgia/london-lost-beach-1970s-forgotten-16787837)

  7. Always good for the soul Bob, a trip to the seaside. Know Herne Bay well, as you say a short drive down from SE London.

    1. 'Lee,

Just a few minutes sitting beside the sea with the sun on my face made me feel so much better, and Herne Bay is a great place to do just that. (We have been there when there has been stormy weather, but even then, sitting watching the sea was so relaxing and invigorating for the soul.)

We hope to go there again soon ... and perhaps I might just manage to persuade Sue to let me drive a bit further on to the HQ of Airfix ... just for a look around!

      All the best,

      Bob
