My latest Belle Époque army is finished

Yesterday I finished renovating, varnishing, and basing my latest Belle Époque army.

The figures are all 15mm Essex Miniatures Hadendowa tribesmen, and I have managed to create a native tribal army that comprises three units armed with firearms (the regular part of the army) and eleven units of spear and sword-armed tribal militia.

The working name for this army’s ‘country’ is Wuzzia … but I may well end up using the name Hadendowa, Beja (the name of the people of whom the Hadendowa form a part), or Bedawi (the language spoken by the Hadendowa) instead of Wuzzia.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I will probably split the army down into two or three smaller tribal groups that can fight each other should the need arise, or come together if threatened by a foreign foe.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hello there Bob,

Wow! That looks pretty impressive for sure! I rather like the Bedawi - as in “In Bedawi?” - it almost has a Carry On/Madasahatta feel to it.

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

I had not realised quite how large this force was until I had rebased them.

My thinking is to split it down into three smaller tribal/clan groups, which when joined together will form Bedawi tribe.

(The name Bedawi appeals for exactly the reason you suggest. It certainly has a made up feel about it.)

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. BOB,
Nice work there on the 15mm Tribesmen- certainly ESSEX are very appealing figures in this scale. Best Wishes. KEV.

I do like Essex Miniatures, and I have a lot of them in my collection, along with quite a few Irregular Miniatures and a few Minifigs.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Looks great. That's quite a horde you've got there. I'd like to see them in a last stand type game coming on in waves.

    1. Mark Cordone,

Cheers … and there are loads more Mahdists to come!

I like the idea of a ‘human wave’ battle! It’s certainly something for me to seriously consider doing.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Bob -
A fine force, to be sure! No doubt some strong and great leader (Thattawayo) will whip the two or three warring tribes into a cohesive little empire that will set about those rapacious and greedy colonists by the ears... :-D

I love the name you suggest, although he might be better as the leader of the Olbele tribe of Dammallia!

You have grasped the sort of idea I have for using this new addition to my Belle Époque collection; a group of weak native tribes who if combined could easily defeat a small colonial army.

      All the best,

      Bob.

I'll be looking forward to that! (It's a shame Paul's and my 'Darkest Aithiops' stumbled against the Covid thing. We have both become immersed in our own separate projects since).

I’m sure that your ‘Darkest Althiops’ campaign will get finished in due course. In the meantime, we have your Napoleonic battle reports to enjoy!

      All the best,

      Bob
