A flag for Sahel

I recently realised that I had not designed a flag for the Sultanate of Sahel ... so I have now rectified that omission!

I wanted a flag that included a green background because of its significance in Islam, and a yellow circle to represent the sun and the desert. In Islam black represents the unknown, the unknowable, or the mysterious (as well as evil), hence its use for ring around the circle.

  1. BOB,
Designing Flags for miniature armies is rather creative and most enjoyable. I'll be doing something similar later on- though in 6mm it will be a challenge. Stay cool there Friend. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

Years ago I worked for Coutts and Company, the bank that is used by the majority of Britain’s aristocracy … including the Royal Family. As a result I developed an interest in many aspects of heraldry, including the design of flags and standards .. l which is why I enjoy designing flags for my imagi-nations.

      All the best,

      Bob

Vexillology is an interesting study (just ask Sheldon Cooper); and vexillography rather fun. In the design for Sahel I might have been tempted to reverse the or and sable, giving it the look of a solar eclipse at perihelion and apogee. Might not look as good though...

It is certainly a striking design!
    Cheers,

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

Funnily enough I tried different combinations of the three colours I used, and to my eyes, this was the best design. Because of the links between Sahel and Harabia (who have an all black flag), I originally used a black background with a green circle surrounded by a gold ring but after playing around with these colour combinations, I ended up with the current design.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I really like that flag. It's simple, clear, good contrast and culturally relevant to the army flying it. That would be super simple to see on a battlefield too. I may even paint that on the side of my kayak! I'll send a picture if I do.

Thanks for your very complimentary comment ,.. and I’d be honoured if you did paint it on your kayak.
