What next for 2023?

Whenever a book gets finished and published, there is a period of euphoria for the author, followed by a serious scrutiny of the initial sales figures to see if the effort was worthwhile ... and then one begins to ask oneself the question 'Well, what next?'

Having had a chat with David Crook, I know that he is already thinking about what book he wants to write next and that I will be involved in that project, but what will my next writing projects be?

I have two in mind.

Firstly, a second PORTABLE WARGAME COMPENDIUM looks like it might be a very feasible project, and I already have several things that I would like to include in it.

Secondly, I'd like to revisit my PORTABLE WORLD WAR II WARGAME rules, specifically with the Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War in mind. I already have a campaign map and system in place, and a working set of rules that need a bit of tweaking. What I need to do is to bring them together in a more coherent way than they are at present.

I would like to pursue these two writing projects whilst finishing off my Belle Époque and Franco-Prussian War of 1810 projects, both of which I have rather ignored of late due to my need to concentrate on getting THE PORTABLE IRONCLADS WARGAME published and dealing with my ongoing cancer treatment.

These are pretty ambitious goals to try to achieve over the next twelve months, but I'd rather set goals to work towards than just bumbling along flitting from unfinished project to unfinished project.

  1. Bob,
It is good that you have set yourself a guiding Plan to work towards...I'm sure that the Ironclads book will go well- it is a very interesting topic. I've been chipping away at my Mystic Horizons Project for the past eight weeks- time has gone rather quickly and now I've found the stage has been reached when I can enjoy the games on offer with the figures and models I have made and completed. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

The book seems to be selling as well as we hoped, and sales have already exceeded 100 copies.

I’ve been following your latest project with great interest, and I can foresee you having lots of fun with it for some time to come.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

    2. Bob,
Thank you for the reply. I've been trying to devise another project- some ideas so far though nothing settled yet- I'd like to do some more sculpting of miniatures though the cost of casting them is prohibative. I'm finding it rather hard to design everything so I guess I should give it some time- eventually I'll get there. Glad to hear the Ironclads Book is selling well. Cheers. KEV.

  4. Hi Bob -
A rebuke to the bumbling flitter - or is it flitting bumbler - that I am with unfinished projects all over the place. Maybe I ought to resolve to finish at least some of them before 2023 is out!

I'm looking forward to reading more of your blogspot during that time. And, if you're looking for a play tester for your 'Portable Barbarossa', I'm your man!

Cheers, and have a happy new year, won't you.

As I enjoy reading about all your projects - regardless of whether they are in limbo, in progress, or finished - I’ll look forward to whatever you write about during 2023.

I’ll certainly send you any draft rules that I write for play.resting or general comments.

      Have a great New Year,

      Bob

    1. Simon,

The rules are going to be operational-level rules and I would hope that they should be adaptable for other theatres of war.

      All the best,
