There's something wrong with the state of ... my digestion

Yesterday Sue and I went to Deal for the day. It was sunny ... but a little cold as there was a stiff breeze blowing in off the sea.

We went for a long walk around the town and had fish and chips for lunch at a local restaurant. Our journey home was a little fraught as a long stretch of the M2 between the turn-off for Maidstone and the western end of the Medway bridge was shut. As a result, we did not get home until 7.00pm and we spent the rest of the evening resting and watching TV.

Overnight I became aware that my digestion was upset, and by this morning the situation had got worse. I won't go into details, but if you have a stoma and stoma bag, the last thing you want or need is your digestive processes going wrong ... and mine has.

I have taken the medication prescribed by my doctor to stop things getting worse, as my digestive system needs time to adsorb my anti-cancer drugs for them to be properly effective. In the meantime, I'm taking things easy and hoping that by later today everything will be back to normal.

  1. Bob,
Hope you recover quickly there and feel back to normal soon. A couple of months ago I had a bad case of reflux- it seemed to last days until I took 'Gaviscon' which the Pharmisey recommended. All the best. KEV.

Cheers! I take Gaviscon quite regularly, but this required something a little stronger. Thankfully, it seems to be working ... but it has taken several hours to 'kick in'.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. I feel your pain Bob, I too have a stoma due to bowel cancer and have learned to live with it over the years but now and again it can be a hard go! Hope you are on the mend and feeling better soon.

Cheers! Its nice to know that I'm not the only person who has good and bad times with their stoma! I'm feeling much better today, but for the life of me I cannot work out what caused the problem.

      All the best,

      Bob

Cheers! Im feeling much better today ... and my wife has already given me a short list of chores to do before I can 'play' on my computer (i.e. work on the Compendium)!

  6. Bob, I hope you will soon be better and able to enjoy things again. Until then, take it easy and don't worry about working on the Compendium - it'll keep!

I've woken up feeling much better this morning, having had an almost uninterrupted night's sleep. My stomach and stoma seem to have returned to normal, but going to be extra careful what I eat for the next few days.

As to the Compendium ... well, I feel like I'm on the last lap of a long race, but I can just about see the finishing line.

      All the best,

      Bob

  7. Wishing you a speedy recovery Bob, sounds awful! All the roads around here (Rochester) were seriously congested yesterday afternoon due to that motorway fire incident, at a standstill in places, so glad you managed to get home.

    1. 'Lee,

Cheers! I am feeling a lot better this morning after a good night's sleep.

I had no idea why there was a holdup on the M2, but now I do. The problem is that there are very few alternative routes between Kent and London from the eastern side of the Medway. The link road to the M20 was jammed by all the extra traffic and I did not fancy driving through Rochester (which sounds like it was just as bad) so we turned off and drove through Gillingham and used the Medway Tunnel to get home. The traffic was heavy, but not much worse that normal.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. Sorry to read of your discomfort Bob. ...but...with all your health issues, fish & chips? As tasty and comforting as that is, all that fat and starch? After all your body has gone through.
My friend, you may need to start researching what foods you should be eating and why that it is the case and what the effect of indulging in the tasty stuff can have on you and eat healthy so we can enjoy your company for years to come!

    1. Ross Mac,

Funnily enough, I eat fish and chips regularly (once a week on average) and as long as I eat a reasonably balanced diet during the rest of the week, I don’t have problems with my stomach and stoma. I keep a food diary to help me keep a track of what I eat, and it is more likely that my stomach problem was caused by something that I ate on Sunday … and that included an olive and pesto focaccia that I ate on Sunday evening.

The dietician who is supposed to be helping me to lose weight didn’t raise any issues about me easting the occasional meal of fish and chips, but I’ve been told to be a bit wary of eating tartare sauce with it as that can be very acidic.

      All the best,

      Bob

  9. Although otherwise healthy I have found over the past few years that my previously cast iron stomach can no longer cope with certain foods. Fish batter is one as is garlic and more or less anything else that is fatty or a bit over spicy. I think it is a factor in getting older so maybe you will have to revise further what you eat. That said very pleased you are feeling better now...Regards.

    1. Tony Adams,

Cheers! I know what you mean. When I was in my twenties I loved to each strong curries … especially if I had a cold as the curry seemed to clear my cold in pretty short order.

Batter on fish is very variable in quality. On Monday, it was beer-battered, which was quite light, crunchy, but not greasy. I also have to be careful when eating anything with garlic in it … and I suspect that might have been what caused my problems

      Alll the best,

      Bob

Thank you for your kind words. I am feeling much better now, but I am taking care to eat rather bland food and drink lots of fluids until I am sure that I am over whatever caused my stomach problems.

      All the best,

      Bob

  10. Hope you've overcome whatever was bothering your digestive system Bob. I was thinking along the same lines as Ross, but it seems like you've got that angle covered.
Late to commenting on this. I can only seem to comment on some blogs when I'm on my laptop, and that is not so often.
    All the best.

    1. Nundanket,

My stomach - and thus my stoma - are better than they were, but I am still having the odd unpleasant 'episode'. Luckily, now that I have had to deal with having a stoma bag for two years, I have the experience necessary to minimise the impact on my daily life. Nowadays, it is a problem I can deal with, not a disaster that I have to endure.

      All the best,

      Bob
